This new match system has left me with no sense of how the match process is unfolding this year. So, all of you fourth year students out there, humor me by telling me where you are in the match process... (answer can be more than one of the options below)

1) Huh, what match?
2) Doing a Sub-I
3) Gathering LORs
4) Writing my personal statement
5) Deciding where to apply
6) Lurking around studentdoctor.net
7) Other (explain)

Thanks!

hmmm....

#5... *ready for take off*

I could use some pointers to low low tier programs, don't care about location.

studying for step 2 ck this month. Just finished my neuro roation last month and have an away elective at the end of september. Trying to figure out where to apply....

Elective #1: check
Elective #2: will do in September
LORs: check
List of where to apply: check

Personal statement: the bane of my existence

I've got a question for you lurkers...for the personal statement, do I need to write 2 (one for the med prelim year, one for neuro PGY2-4 programs) or is one statement extolling the virtues of a life spent in neuro enough? 🙄

I was advised to write two

Does this advice apply when applying to categorical programs with linked prelim medicine years?

I wrote one, then altered it slightly to fit for a prelim year statement. I applied mostly to programs with guaranteed first year spots, so it didn't really matter.

If you make no mention of the value of the prelim year in your statement, that's not so good. If you just add it to a statement that says you love Neuro, it'll seem artificial. If you write one that says you really want to go into medicine, then why the he11 are you applying to Neuro? Just make sure what your statement says makes sense for what you're using it for.

I'm figuring out where to apply and writing my freaking personal statement. I would love some advice on how to search for preliminary medicine years.

Go to AMA FREIDA
http://www.ama-assn.org/vapp/freida/srch/

Under "Choose Specialty" click the "Internal Medicine" box.

Hit Continue.

Under "Choose Location" select the states/regions you want to look in.

Hit Continue.

Under "Optional Criteria" select the "Offer preliminary positions" pull-down box and click "Offer preliminary positions"

Hit Continue.

Click "Search" or "Search Plus"

Bingo! A list of all prelim medicine programs in the states/regions selected.

its gonna be tough submitting the applications, trying to work out the interviews, waiting for the match.....
Bad days ahead !!..

So far, I've got my ERAS application mostly finished, and I have a pretty good idea of places I want to apply. However, I still need to get one or two more LORS, write a second personal statement for my prelim year and finish up my neurology rotations.

So pretty much everything you mentioned. But it'll all come together soon enough.

5) Deciding where to apply. I know where I think my "dream" places are, but not sure about how many others to apply to.

My ERAS is othewise complete. My credit card is gonna suffer over the MATCH, but it'll be worth it.
