I know what specialty I want to apply for. I have the list of every program that has osteopathic residencies but I'm looking for more info on each specific program. How do I know which programs are out of my league and where I'll be competitive? Many of the hospitals on the list I am not familiar with and therefore do not know if they are well regarded or not. I don't want to waste my time applying for spots that I'm not competitive for. thanks!!

I don't think these exist. Programs don't release their avg USMLE/COMLEX scores; they do, however, often release minimums below which they will not grant interviews.

ahh thanks for the info. I thought that might be the case. so whats the thought process in choosing where to apply? I am average for the specialty I want so I don't want to waste my time/effort trying to get into places that would never take me. any info on where to find the minimum requirements?

could you be any less helpful

Yes, probably.

I think if you want people to help you, you need to be more specific. What are you applying for? What are your board scores? Do you want to do a specific fellowship?

When I applied for residency, I got interviews from some great places that I thought would never interview me. You'll never know what your options are unless you apply.

What's he's saying is that you should just apply widely. It doesn't cost that much time or money to apply to a lot of programs... you just apply to a whole bunch and then see where you get interviews, and based on the interview day and asking current/past residents about the program you'll make your decisions about how to rank a particular program (if at all).

But yeah it's kind of a shot in the dark if you aren't familiar with the programs. Look for the minimum requirements on the program websites or on the FREIDA database for allopathic programs.

I'd recommend if your school releases a list of where alumni go for residency and their contact info, if any of them are at the places you're interested in, shoot them an email and ask them how they like the program etc.

thank you. im looking into gen surg. no specific fellowships in mind but potentially oncology. I plan on applying very widely. I'm looking into setting up guest rotations for next fall and want to save those months for programs I think I will have a good shot with. I've emailed the chief resident or whomever the hospital website wants to punish with random emails for some hospitals today. very good call on the alumni thing, ill look into that for sure. thanks!!

You need to plan on going ACGME if you have any interest in g-surg fellowships.

Hang out in the surgery forum and keep your ear to the ground. The chatter in each specialty forum can give you done insight into which programs are the "best". That said, there is no harm in applying broadly aside from a wallet that's $13 lighter. If I'd tried to be strategic, I would have passed over a top DO EM program, and they wound up offering me an interview. Dream big! Never know what an individual PD might value. 😉

I'll definitely keep my eye on the surg forum thank you. I have no problem with $13 to apply to every single program (i think its around 50) the money isn't a huge issue. The biggest reason I was looking for this info is so I can decide where to set up audition rotations at places I think I'll have the best chance of matching.

False, just makes it harder. I will say surg-onc is a very competitive fellowship, and if you want to take one of these spots as a DO from a AOA residency you need to be at one of the places where their DO grads regularly match ACGME fellowships, have research, and basically be an all-star.

I was at a DO program recently where the attending (who came from that DO program) had recently finished a fellowship at an ivy league institution for surg-onc. When your going on the rotation/interview process find out where their grads go for fellowship and see if they regularly take those ACGME fellowships. Who knows whats going to happen though with this whole ACGME/AOA thing.
