Hi, I recently graduated and would like to present posters from my honours research. However, I will be moving back home across the country - and is unfamiliar with any opportunities to present the poster here. Can anyone give me insight to if there is an online database that lists all the places/conferences/meetings that I can submit a poster to? THis is research in molecular biology.

1. Search for professional molecular bio associations/organizations.
2. Search through said association/s website for information on conferences.
3. Observe the date/s of the conference/s and the deadline/s for submission/s.
4. Submit abstract for consideration.
5. Profit.

Also, as my dear friend Nick of Naylors stated, contacts help. I wouldn't have landed my poster presentation for this upcoming October without the assistance of my P.I.

If you don't have a P.I. in the field you stated, perhaps write a well-written cold email to some professors from your old university asking about upcoming conferences/opportunities.

Keep in mind that the national meetings generally occur in the fall or the spring. The deadline for applications is usually 6 months or more before the meeting. If you are selected, you will need to pay your travel expenses to the meeting as well as the admission fee (often several hundred, even for a one-day ticket). At this point, the soonest you could hope for would be Spring 2012. Ask your advisor for information on organizations in your field.

Hi, thanks for the ideas. I have already looked into these national conferences, and unfortunately there is no way I can afford them. My PI does not have 400$ for these registration, and neither do I, plus travel, accommodation, and food expenses.

One thing I am looking at is the VIRTUAL POSTER proceedings by Journal of Young Investigators (http://www.jyi.org/articleimages/3710/2011 VPS Feature.pdf)

Do you think these virtual poster sessions will count as a real poster session? I still make a poster, present, and be judged, except everything is done online and not in person. Thanks for your advice LizzyM.

No, but I bet they are better than nothing.
Hell, I would have given it a shot if I knew about it a year ago - if nothing else for ish and giggles.

The point of presenting to peers and leaders in the field is the give and take of face-to-face interactions and development of skills associated with verbal presentations.

As for the money... why is that people will spend money for a alternate spring break, a mission trip, a road trip, and all sorts of other things but won't spend a comparable amount for a scientific meeting that will provide as much or more benefit to one's application if it is connected with a presentation?

So if I did a JYI virtual poster presentation, in your books, you wouldn't count it formally as a "real" poster presentation?

I should add your money point is not really valid, you are talking about spending 400$ ON TOP of regular travelling and accomodation expenses.

Do they give the viewers virtual wine and cheese so they can stumble by half drunk and ask you for the millionth time "So what did you do?"😀

On a more serious note, I think that you could list this under the main research entry if you decided to do this digital version, similar to how a campus poster presentation would be listed

Well, you didn't present to others in person so it is more like an online publication. I guess the next question would be if it was peer reviewed and if there are some that are not selected for "posting".

ASBMB registration for undergrads who are presenting posters is FREE!

A lot of times you can join the society sponsoring the conference and then get a heavily reduced rate for registration.
I think Experimental Biology (spring) was about $150 between registration and an abstract/poster. That's not counting housing/transpo, though.

NFkappaB, can you get your university to pay for travel expenses for presentations? I think most universities have a fund set aside for such.
