I've already matched into derm, and would be happy to share any tips I have to those of you who are applying. However, I was wondering where dermatology residents and current dermatologists go these days to have anonymous online discussions about things like getting job, setting up private practice, etc....

Being at an academic institution, the idea of private practice (with some cosmetics) is somewhat taboo to discuss. Does anybody know of any forums where I can find information about topics such as: learning cosmetics after residency, best cities to practice in, expected salaries, job search tips, how to set yourself up during residency to land a good job, etc...

Thanks

Being as cosmetics is part of our field, I am also interested. There is a ton of psychiatry in Derm, with cosmetics being a big part of this. Cosmetics also plays a big role in cultural Derm. This is coming from someone who plans to stay in academics so he can continue his geeky basic science research endeavors. 🙂

As an aside, I used the term "cosmetic cardiology" to describe those patients who go in for a quick fix cath w/o following through with lifestyle modification, only to return for more coronary tune ups. My cards preceptor didn't disagree. This, I think, is where the felt taboo lies. If only everyone could change such that appearance weren't as important as it appears to be. Just like if only patients would simply stop smoking and start exercising regularly. The difficulty here is that it is hard, for anyone. We are visual beings and we are creatures of habit.
