Hey all,

I just submitted my AAMCOS today and sent my transcripts too. I have some crappy stats. I have a 3.2 with a 25 MCAT and applied to TOURO-NV, TOURO-CA, AZCOM, KCOM, LECOM-Brandenton, and PCSCOM (parents live in KY).

I have worked a neuro tech, polysom tech, and a house orderly. I have volunteered at the food bank, and a local hospital. I am about to shadow some D.O. docs, but I am pretty sure that I can get some M.D.'s to write me some good LORs.

I know my stats are really low, but I think if I have a chance for an interview I can show my passion for medicine and get in. I am really hoping for an interview and eventually acceptance.

Where is everyone else applying and what are their stats? Good luck to everyone.

Peace.

Hey Mizzoudude,

Don't sweat your stats! I am sure you'll get some interviews. I'm in the same boat you are as far as stats - 23Q on the MCAT and a 3.7 GPA. Similar experience as far as work and volunteering. I too am about to shadow a D.O. She's a pediatrician here in Whitefish, MT. She graduated from DMU and finished her residency last July. I'm excited!!!

I applied to Touro-NV, AZCOM, Western, DMU, LECOM, UNECOM, and PCSCOM.

Good luck! Maybe I'll see some of you at interviews (hopefully)!!!

Hey. I am submitting this week. I have a 3.05 GPA with a 2.81 science. Also got a 25 on the MCAT. But I think my extracurriculars are what might gain me an admittance. In school, I was a RA, TA, student government, chair of a volunteer organization, researcher in chem with a publication, member of two honor societies with 13 and 7 members in the school respectively, captain of the rugby team and a few other things as well. I held down anywhere from 3-5 jobs in school also. After college, I won a fellowship to study holistic medicine, specifically shamanism and psychoneuroimmunology, in Russia, London, and Scotland. My research in that is hoping to get published this summer as a first author. I have shadowed DOs and MDs and worked as a phlebotomist for a few months with more clinical to come I hope. Anybody who knows anyone with connections in Boston in healthcare would be helpful. 😀

Anyway, I am applying to UNECOM (1st choice), PCOM, NOVA, CCOM, NYCOM, KCOM, DMUCOM, LECOM-FL, and LECOM-Erie. I am getting a LoR from a grad of UNECOM and am in touch with a few current students there as well. Wish everyone luck.

My stats are about the same too. 24Q and 3.38 or something GPA. My science is higher, 3.6 or something. I try not to dwell on my gpa bc most of those less than A scores are from long long ago. I've worked in the medical field clinically for about 3 years or so. I've volunteered here and there but am doing more starting next month. I too hope to get to the interview so that I can express my passion. Also, my LOR I think will help me bc I tend to get the top grades in my classes and I hope the schools will know my capabilities to learn. My teachers and the doctors at work know this about me.

Anyway, everyone I know (especially the docs) say that intelligence, passion, experience and ability to communicate with patients are all very important reasons for acceptance. They claim that if you can't communicate with patients it doesn't matter how intelligent you are. Patients want a doctor who is both intelligent and accessible. If you build a relationship (good rapport) with your patients they will be more likely to follow your directions and have better outcomes. Not to mention that the mind and body are connected. A patient with a good attitude is more likely to get better faster.
Anyway, I put in my AACOMAS application on 6/28/05. I applied to KCOM, OSU, and KCUMB (UHS).
Good luck everyone!

Your stats really aren't bad...I'd take your odds of getting accepted to Vegas in a second! 😀

Hi all. I have a 3.65 GPA with a 27L MCAT(apparently i cannot utilize the english language). I am a Research Assistant in a Biochemistry, as well as a Neuropharmacology Lab. I volunteered at a local hospital for 4 semesters. I have been volunteering at the local hospice and I am a high school student mentor. I have shadowed 2 MDs and 2 DOs. I have been a part of premed AMSA also. Lastly(not medical obv), I earned my jump wings at US Army Airborne School.

I applied to PCOM, NSUCOM, LECOM Bradenton, OUCOM, UMDNJ, WVCOM, KCUMB and MSUCOM. Good luck!

Very nicely put, ambernikel--exactly correct. I couldn't have said it better myself.

My Stats are 3.80 Science GPA, 3.81 Overall, 23T MCAT (7 7 9B). I am currently involved in polymer chem research for cartilage tissue engineering applications, I have been and am a TA for 8 science classes, am an inorganic chem lab assistant, work in the college library, pay for college myself, take > 20 credits/sem. I have also done biochem research concurrently with my polymer research. I also shadow a DO, and this will be done as an internship in Fall 2005 semester.
At the moment, I am completing a fellowship up at UNECOM...this is my #1 choice for DO school. I absolutely love it here...the location, people, students, profs I'm working with...all +'s to this school...

Also applying to:
AZCOM, CCOM, UNECOM, OUCOM, NSUCOM, LECOM, LEBRA, NYCOM, PCOM, VCOM, KCOM.

...sincerely hope I get into UNECOM, but applied to a range for certainly. Anyone have any suggestions/comments on my chances?

Good luck to all...

Ryan.

Sade...Smooth Operator. 😎

I think it is going to take a week for AAMCOS to recieve my stuff, and then about 6 weeks to process. I probably won't be seeing secondaries for a long long time.

I really hope I am invited to an interview eventually. I think if I get a solid interview, I have a chance.

I have a 3.46 Overall GPA, 3.26 science, and a 29N MCAT (10V,11B,8Pdarn it).

I'm applying to KCOM, DMU, LECOM-B, VCOM, NOVA, Touro-NV, Western, and New England. KCOM is probably my top choice so far.

ER volunteer, EMT-B and campus, 2 years research, 2 yr. LDS mission to paraguay, some U.S. shadowing, some shadowing in United Arab Emirates, Ice Hockey.... some other stuff. Good luck to all!!

3.57 overall
3.58 science
27Q (8P,11V,8B)

I've applied to:
CCOM
LECOM - Erie
LECOM - Bradenton
MSUCOM
OUCOM
WVCOM

I'm non-trad and my background is in engineering with 2 years of undergrad research and 2 papers. My MS research started in January in a different lab and field. I have tutoring and teaching experience and some volunteering but not much. I am trying to find a DO to shadow. If nothing happens this cycle I'm planning to retake the MCAT with a little more studying. I'm going to try to take fewer classes and cut back on the work schedule. I think the major problem with my application will be the small amount of volunteering/shadowing. I am also trying to stay reasonably close to home.

Patho- I think your scores are good. I've come to think that the writing score is totally random. I mean, I wrote an embarassingly bad WS. It was complete crap, only about 6 sentences total and I got a Q. It doesn't make sense. Obviously you can use English! I can't imagine that anyone getting a BS/BA can't use English properly. This is particularly true with the high GPAs we see around here. SDNers are not poor writers!

Mizzoudude, it took them less than a week to process my application. I sent it in the weekend after the MCAT scores came out.

I hope everyone keeps us abreast of how the application cycle is going this year. It's very exciting to know that we are not alone in this. Good luck everyone!!!

I am hopefully sending mine in within two weeks. I have 3.5 Overall and 3.3 Science, with a 30M (11V 10P 9B). I was a cell and molec biology major from Tulane University. Not so great EC's... This is my second time applying, but first to DO schools. I am applying to CCOM, PCOM, NYCOM, DMUCOM, and KCUMBCOM, and to MD schools in Chicago, Kansas City, and Philly. I am hoping that the second time is the charm...

ccom, mich state, western, azcom, lecom (?), pcom, umdnj...

so far

edit: ...and nsu.

i got crappy stats too..3.3 gpa..3.05 science..would be higher if math was included o well..mcat 24 (8s across) decent EC for a traditional student 1 publication..shadow md, do...boss is a big shot doctor at baylor college of medicine..hopefully i'll make it too

applied to: UNECOM (first choice tied with AZCOM), both LECOM, both PCOM, CCOM, both TOURO, NOVA, NYCOM, UMNJ...please accept meeee...hehe 🙂

i just submitted my app yesterday. as well as mcat scores..half of my transcripts are on their way..the other half mite not be ready until a week or so...so i prolly wont see secondaries for awhile as well.

not the best stats, but not the worst... 3.4 GPA, 3.0 science (I'm blanking on exact numbers- it was a long week), 29Q MCAT (8PS, 9BS, 12VR) which I have to say I'm a little proud of because I didn't study at all... oops!

in grad school full time getting a somewhat obscure MS in women's studies, with a concentration in women and health. also work full time in a gynecology practice, doing patient counseling, phlebotomy, sonograms, and assisting in procedures. lots of hands on patient experience. your basic undergrad things: president of a couple clubs, three years on the exec board of the student government, RA, chem and calc TA.

applying to: AZCOM, CCOM, LECOM, NYCOM, PCOM, TUCOM-CA, Western, and thinking about UMDNJ.

rereading PS over and over again, will submit by end of weekend, all transcripts are on their way.

Decent stats (atleast I hope so). 3.75 GPA 24Q MCAT. Im a member of 4 Honor Societies, Who's Who, student mentor, special dissections, deans/presidents list, clubs, etc. I also work full time as an Assistant Manager at Wal-Mart which does nothing but confirm my desire to practice medicine. Hoping that will help show my maturity and leadership abilities to make up for my MCAT a bit.

Submited my app with transcripts on 6/29, but they havent been processed yet. (Seems like an eternity).

Applied to CCOM, DMUCOM, AZCOM, Western, KCOM, KCUMB, TUCOM-NV, UNMC, U of Vermont, Loma Linda and Creighton, although I dont really want to go to an allopathic school anymore. AZCOM and Henderson are my top choices.

Hopefully those secondaries will start pouring in. 🙂

Here I go. 😉
My overall GPA is 3.71 and science is 3.66 with MCAT of 27 (V=8, P=9, B=10). It is obvious that English is my second language. I have been speaking Japanese for 18 years of my life (English for less than 4 years).
ECs include NCAA Division I athletic for four years, physiology research for 2 years with presentation at national conference, volunteer work at a free clinic, tutoring Japanese, full time intern in Washington DC at a radiology research institution, bio major w/ minor in chem.

Hopefully not shadowing a DO would not hurt me too much 😀

I am applying to WesternU only....

28Q (11V, 9B, 8P), 3.69 overall, 3.51 science. 600+ volunteer hours, tons of shadowing of DOs/MDs (200+ hours), no research. Applying to a lot of MD schools and these DO schools:
1) AZCOM
2) CCOM
3) DMU
4) OSU-COM

Hey all-

I have always wanted to be a DO. I'm not applying to any MD schools but I just feel it's not for me. My grades are good: 3.9 Cum GPA and 3.95 science GPA. My MCAT scores aren't that great tho: only got a 23R. I'm planning on a retake for August. Anyway, I have a good cv with alot of DO shadowing, research, and volunteer experiences. Do you think I have a chance?

Good luck to you. I'm trying to learn Japanese right now. It is not easy! I've actually kind of put it aside while I'm in summer class and preparing to retake the MCAT in Aug. But I'm hoping to be able to communicate a little bit when I visit family in Tokyo next year.

Hey Ryan,

I think you definitely have a chance! Maybe not at some of the top schools, but you'll be a fine candidate in most others. But what the hell, apply to any schools you want!!! I think you'll be pleasantly surprised...

Im a non-traditional applicant. MCAT not so hot: VR 7 PS 7 BS 8= 22N. I have maintained a 4.0 for the past 3 years. I have an associates degree in an allied healthcare field, and will a have a completely different bachelors. My total undergrad GPA is 3.78, science 3.74, non-science 3.81. I am a volunteer translator at a local hospital, and have 5 years clinical expience with direct patient contact. Anyway, here are the schools I have chosen to apply to:

LECOM-Erie, PCOM (PA and GA campuses) and KCUMB (UHS)

Reapplicant.

3.29 cum / 3.33 science / Retaking the MCAT.
Last Year: 3.31 cum / 3.17 science / 10,5,7 MCAT

Applied to LECOM-B, LECOM-PA, PCOM-GA, VCOM, WVSOM, NSUCOM, TUCOM-NV, Wester COMP, DMU, NYCOM, Pikeville, UNECOM, Ross, SGU, and AUC.

My current job, which becomes official September 19, is in law enforcement as a probation and parole agent for the state. However, due to the recent push back of the hiring date, the police academy (which is mandatory, even though I won't be a patrol officer) training dates span the entire prime interview season for med school (Oct - Dec); all meeting dates are mandatory. I'm not really sure what to do on this one. Most med schools don't do interviews on weekends?

I'm also currently in a phlebotomy course as a backup in case I have to drop the P/P agent thing.

Usual EC's: volunteering, mentoring, TA'ing, martial arts, music, yadda yadda. They don't mean anything.

Who knows when I'll be able to go to any interviews I may or may not get; my job appears to be going to interfere with them. In the words of Terrance, I'm up fart creek without a paddle.

Non-traditional applicant. 3.36 Science, 3.19 Cummulative. Currently work as a physician assistant. Start a new job with a D.O. as my supervising physician late september. 28O on the MCAT 8,10,10. Retaking the MCAT in August.

Applying KCOM, CCOM, AZCOM, OSUCOM, KCUMB, DMU-OMC.

Already complete for AACOMAS, and KCOM secondary submitted. Working on others.

Applied to MD programs as well.

I don't call those stats "crappy," just low. You have a great chance of getting multiple acceptances.

I had a 29 MCAT, graduated with a 3.7 overall GPA.

Applied KCOM, PCOM, LECOM.

Secondaries and interview invites to all 3.
Withdrew from LECOM without interviewing... didn't really want to go there.
Interviewed KCOM and PCOM.
Accepted KCOM and PCOM.
Attending KCOM... starting in a month!

I'm a non-trad. 3.63 overall, 3.81 BCPM, 28R.
I'm a Michigan resident.

Applied:
MSUCOM
Turo-Nevada
Nova
AZCOM

Also state MD schools, and some out of state as well.

Good EC's and LOR's.

Good luck everyone. It's dedication first and foremost, so keep at it and just don't give up.

Hey all. I had a crappy UG but an awesome Grad. I am taking the MCAT this August and already sent in my application. I am applying to:

UMDNJ-SOM
PCOM
LECOM-BRAD
Nova
NYCOM

Because of an error I had fixed AACOM is going to send my apps in this week.

Good luck to us all

Hello everyone! 🙂

I am a non-tradional student with a BS in computer science.

3.4 overall GPA, 3.76 Science with a 24M MCAT (retaking in August)
The only volunteer work I have is with Hospice which started in May.

I am applying to LECOM (Bradenton,) PCSOM and NSUCOM.

Wish me luck!

Okay, I figure nobody knows what I'm going through better than SDNers so here goes! I know we're always playing the will-I-get-in-with-these-stats game, so I'm going to play too. However, before I begin I need to say that I have applied for early decision (EDP) to WesternU/COMP. As a result, I signed a contract that prohibits me from being able to apply to any other schools until the end of Aug (by which time they will have made a decision).

However, if I am not accepted (my app goes into regular pile), I will send out my application to other schools but at this point, will my chances of getting in be greatly diminished? I started reading old threads about how applying to EDPs is not a good idea because they will only accept very strong applicants and if you don't get accepted, the rest of your apps will be late. I did receive a secondary from COMP though, which is a good sign. So without further ado, what do you think my chances are of getting into COMP through EDP are and what do you think my chances are of getting into any other DO school after Aug? I appreciate any feedback.

Cum GPA: 3.40
Sci GPA: 3.27
MCAT: 29O (10B, 10P, 9V)

Thanks and good luck to everyone applying 😉

3.53 sci/3.5 cum/30R...PSYCHED about the DO schools...Applied to AZCOM, OUCOM (OH res), and DMU...Completed secondary at all of them except DMU...No one's heard from them yet, no?

trucki, i think your chances are great at getting into any DO school assuming your 'other stuff' is decent too!

here's to a very early comp acceptance 🙂

Finally finished everything up and got it sent in tonight. I hope the secondaries come soon.

My stats: 25M (although english is my first language I must not be fluent in it), 3.36GPA, Science is slightly lower. Volunteer work at a free medical clinic with a DO, Shadowed another DO, Teaching Assistant for human anatomy labs, Play Lacrosse on my schools team.

Applied to DMU-COM, NYCOM, PCOM, CCOM, KCUMB, NOVA

what are my chances???

I applied to 10 D.O. schools: PCOM, CCOM, KCOM, NYCO, WUHS, NOVA, UNEC, AZCO, TUCO, LEBRA. My stats: Science 3.46, nonscience 3.5 and a 23 P on the MCAT which I am taking again in August. I have a lot of volunteer experience, research, and a great D.O. letter. I applied to a bunch because I was told my stats were low and that would help my chances of getting into one.

I applied 2 weeks ago and already got secondaries from CCOM and NOVA. Touro in San Francisco is my first choice so I hope they send me one sometime soon.

 I got a 25N, so me write pretty. Your numbers are close to mine, so I hope your chances are good.

3.45 cum/3.95 sci. Volunteered at a clinic for the homeless, shadowed, worked as a graphic designer for a while (i have an exceedingly useful art degree), nothing too exciting. Applied to OSUCOM, AZCOM, PCOM, CCOM. My app. was mailed out 7/14, and I got my first secondary today from CCOM.

I'm in OK. I was told by the woman at the admissions office that they *try* to grant interviews to all OK residents who meet the minimum requirements. I still have to finish my secondary though -- i'm starting to slack off. g'luck to us :luck:

I was accepted to every DO school I applied to...the key is to get it in early and not wait until deadlines, not your stats. If you have a high gpa and low MCAT doesn't matter. If you have a low GPA and decent MCAT...still doesnt matter. I attended KCUMB and just started internship. My stats were:
27S (9,9,9) 3.2 GPA 3.0 science. I have a good friend that had 3.5ish grades and a 23 MCAT...and I know of a 21 MCAT and lots of lower 20's. DON'T WORRY ABOUT STATS. GET APPS IN ASAP!!!

I think you'll be ok. You'll still beat the August MCAT group. Their scores won't be out until October. I think that's early enough.

No, but it won't hurt to apply earlier. Make sure you get the LORs ready. This can delay many applicants.

Thanks. The problem is just that I am contractually bound not to apply elsewhere until Aug 30 since I am applying through the EDP to COMP.

Just a quick question: My stats are 3.9 overall GPA, MCATS are 23R (also retaking them this August); I got my primary application sent out this past Friday and the transcripts will be getting mailed out sometime this week.

I was wondering if you guys think it's a good idea for me to apply to a foreign med school within the next few weeks as a back-up plan in case I don't get a DO acceptance. I want to do primary care medicine, and my emphasis is truly the DO route by all means, but I don't want to get stuck in my senior year with no other options. Thanks for any help!

From everything I have heard, it sounds like a really bad idea to go to the foreign med schools. Seems that most residencies do not take a foreign MD very seriously and would much rather have a DO. obviously your mcat is quite low, but your gpa is excellent. if you have good EC's and LOR's to go along with the gpa, you probably have a pretty decent shot. apply to a bunch of schools and see what happens. if things dont work out this year you can always do a post bac. program and try again next year. just keep at it. things will all work out in the end.
