Hello,

I recently graduated in May with a sub-3.0 GPA (cumulative and science/AMCAS and AACOMAS), but my last 56 credits have GPA of 3.589 and were loaded with upper level science courses. I am planning on doing a DIY post bacc consisting of 34 credits of additional upper level sciences to bring the c/sGPAs above 3.0 to avoid auto-screen - which will then put me at an upward trend of 90 credits at 3.744. If the DIY post bacc goes according to plan, I will end up with AACOMAS sGPA around 3.1 and AMCAS sGPA barely crossing 3.0. Will this be enough to demonstrate reinvention and possibly earn some interviews for MD and DO, or should I make a different plan?

MCAT score: 514
ECs:
  • 300 non-clinical volunteering hours
  • 900 scribing hours
  • 50 shadowing hours
  • 2 potential publications
  • president of org at university for 1 year, treasurer for 2 years
5 letters of recommendation (1 DO, 1 MD, 1 research PI, 2 science faculty)

Thank you for reading this.

Yes, as long as both your sGPA and cGPA are above 3.0 you should receive DO interviews with your MCAT of 514 and your ECs. You could potentially receive MD interviews depending on your state of residence.

Thank you for your response. I currently reside in VA. Which MD schools do you suggest I apply to given my state of residence? I plan on applying to all DO schools except the ones on Goro's bad-boy list.

You could try these MD schools next June:
Eastern Virginia
Virginia Commonwealth
West Virginia
George Washington
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
Seton Hall
New York Medical College
Albany
Vermont
Quinnipiac
NOVA MD
TCU-UNT
Creighton
Loyola
Medical College Wisconsin
Western Michigan
Oakland Beaumont
Wayne State

You will receive DO interviews, less likely MD interviews.

Might want to consider doing a SMP. Obtaining a 3.7+ in one of these programs will boost your chances for MD by a mile.

I hope so, I am not picky about MD or DO, just want to attain the end goal without wasting time.
