I know some people say class rank doesn't matter for P/F class but we get top 15% nomination to AOA so I am shooting for that. I average 91% with the averages on the exams being 83%-84%. I know its hard to determine where I stand due to the lack of standard deviation / skew but can someone give their input and experience. Also advice? thanks

There's really nothing to tell you. You're doing well. Is it top 15%? I don't know. Maybe there's 15 people scoring 92-100 in your 100 person class. My advice would be talk to an advisor at your school who actually knows the details

How does getting AOA change anything? You’re doing well and hopefully learning/retaining the info. Continue to do that on boards and clerkships and everything will work out regardless of the gold star next to your name.

It took me almost a decade to get into medical school after college due to poor academics and I do not want academics to ever prevent me from my goals in the future.

People will tell you not to worry since it’s P/F but I totally understand the whole AOA thing if it’s something you really want. Some AOA doesn’t really depend too much on preclinical with a much heavier focus on clincial grades. But for those with junior AOA, preclinical grades are essential. At our school, they give SD, and they’re typically 6-8 pts and from what I hear this is pretty standard at most schools. Since being one standard above the mean puts you around the 16th percentile, you ate probably right around the threshold, but there really is no telling what side you fall on. Remember too that AOA takes into account things like research, leadership, service, etc at most schools so you can’t let those things slip through the cracks either unless you’re in the like the 5% or better

My school was also like this but weighed clinical stuff more heavily (from my understanding anyway)

The average for averages (lol) is probably around an 84 - sometimes a little higher or few points lower depending on the block. As for CV, I definitely wouldn't try to inflate it. Stick to one club that you genuinely like and be a leader for it your M2 year. Find a service cause you like and just do some volunteering for it when you have free time. And try to get one pub if you can or present at a national conference if the pub doesn't come quick. If you do that and are in the top 15%, there's really no way they can keep you out unless you are very disliked for some reason. It's not like applying to neurosurg or derm where you have to 1000 pubs to get an interview. The CV is generally just about checking boxes as long as you already have the grades.

You should be asking your faculty this.
