where do lipid and steroid get broken down?

smooth er. think about the liver, it is packed with smooth er. people who drink a lot of beer, which is detoxed in the liver, get fat. that is just a connection to fat breakdown, detox, and the smooth er.

I thought the Smooth ER was for detox, but also lipid synthesis, not lipid breakdown?? I know Peroxisomes though are for fat breakdown. Anyone know for sure???

you're right denttiger, i would have missed that on the test. lipases, ubiquitos in the body and some made by the pancreas, break down stored triglycerides and those from the diet by lipolysis into glycerol and fatty acids. glycerol is converted to glyceraldehyde phosphate used in glycolysis through an oxidation reaction in the cell. fatty acids either go through ketogenesis or beta oxidation indirectly or directly, respectively, becoming acetyl Co A. ketogenesis occurs in the liver by ??? beta oxidation occurs in the mitochondria to form acetyl co a.

I believe it is the mitochondrial matrix, where lipids get transported through the cell and go into the FAOC (fatty acid oxidation cycle) where they can then be passed thru the kreb's cycle for further breakdown to acetyl coA (or different building blocks such as succinate, alpha ketogluterate, etc...

I will check my cell notebook when I go home to make sure.
