Where do you book your flights?
Started by wantVCUdental
Southwest usually has cheap flights. Check there. If they don't I use somewhere like Orbitz to find a cheap deal and then book it through the actual airline website.
Edit: Seeing as your predents profile isn't correct, I couldn't put in the actual date, but here is what Southwest turned up: http://www.southwest.com/flight/sel...A4EF09&ss=0&int=HOMEQBOMAIR&companyName=&cid=
"Wanna get away" option is really cheap if you are a couple weeks out from the flight date.

call expedia... to make things easier then if you find it cheapest @ any of these
orbitz, hotwire, & priceline...
then call them back and they will refund you the money.
and yes flight+hotel+car+food from dc area would cost you near $700

I use google - you can type in the departure and arrival airports and the dates and it gives you seven options to quickly search.
For example, I'm trying to track down a flight to check out Columbia so I've been putting "MKE to NYC" in the search bar on firefox and entering my travel dates. Then I open up each flight website in different tabs. It saves a lot of time.

what are the "want to get away" tickets from southwest??? are they standby tickets?

I believe they are just regular tickets. It looks like the only major difference is that they aren't fully refundable, and if you need to change them you have to pay a fee. I believe you are assured a seat with them.
jet blue has some cheap tickets too. OR use Kayak and it will show you all the good website prices. You have got to buy tickets early
+1 Kayak checks almost all airlines except SW for the lowest price. It also does fare notifications, trends, history, and many other things that can help you find the lowest price. I also check SW manually for fares.
Book as early as you can, and check fares everyday. Fares tend to be the cheapest when on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
And here's what I do: If you have good flexibility on flight times and dates, book the most packed airplane possible. Reason is, is that you have greater chances of having the flight overbooked, and you can voluntarily decline your seat, and get a voucher for a second flight (and sometimes hotels and seat upgrades too). It doesn't always work, but so far I've been successful 3 times out of the 30 or so flights I've been on.

I really really like orbitz
I am flying to USC soon, and the cheapest flight i can find is about $450-500 (flying from DC area).... so this interview will run me about $600...
where do you guys find your flights?
thanks
If you wanna save money, stay at the Vagabond Inn. It seems kinda sketch, and it's not that nice (it's not the Hilton but not a dump), but it does the job and the room is pretty clean and comfortable inside and it's way cheaper that any other place. Also, it's within walking distance to the interview (which the USC interview is pretty much a joke anyway). Also, you don't need to rent a car unless you plan to drive around LA. Just take a shuttle to and from the airport.
For airline flights, I used Kayak when I flew. If you fly out on Tues-Thursday or Saturday you can typically find lower rates. On kayak you can search flight +/- 3 days from the selected departure/arrival date in order to get the cheapest flight.

Agreed. I love how they update you via e-mail for gate numbers/seat numbers
oh and...you can change and choose seats online before printing a boarding ticket. not sure if others allow that - hotwire doesn't, i'm sure of that.
Book as early as possible. Prices start to go up 2 weeks from the departure date. Say you check prices 3-4 weeks before the departure date and its 199. If you look it up again 10 days before the departure date, then it will probably be 300+. If you look it up 3 days before the date, it will probably be double.
I use orbitz, priceline, cheapoair, hotwire, etc. Compare all of them.
If you go to google and type like "southwest specials" sometimes they might have some deals for you. Try "airline specials" with whatever airline you want.

Amazing search engine for flights. Pretty good for domestic flights- I got a really good deal on my flight to the northeast 2 weeks before flying out. (Kayak didnt turn up the same results.)
(Side note: this site is GREAT for finding cheap flights within europe!)

If you find a reasonable ticket on orbitz/priceline or any of those sites, try going directly to the airline's website. I found a Delta ticket for $350 on orbitz for the departure time I was looking for and I got if for $280 by going to the delta site.
Also, when I was searching on the weekend, all the flights were so expensive. I searched this morning (Monday) and got a much better deal. I don't know if that is just a coincidence though....

A little off topic...
UFRalo mentioned this deal in the Minnesota thread.... It helped me get a much cheaper hotel rate. It seems to work for other cities as well...
