Where do you guys primarily study, and where do you think it's most effective to study?

I do almost all my studying in my room. This is largely because I don't start on homework/studying until 12 am or so. However, studying in my room is the worst place because it's easy to kick back and relax and get distracted.

Ideally for me, studying in a public place is best. The library at my college is too stuffy and uncomfortably quiet so I enjoy studying at the student union building. there's a fair amount of space and a decent amount of background noise which is perfect. And you feel less alone during those times where you're putting in hours and hours of studying. The only downside to this is if you run into your friends.. and get distracted.

I like studying at Starbuck's. Like you, I need to have some background noise. But all of the student coffee shops on campus are so crowded and have loud music blasting constantly. Starbuck's may be huge and commercialized, but its atmosphere is more conducive to studying. Also then you don't have to go far to get caffeine.

I study at home. There are a lot of distractions, but if you can shut them out, it's very convenient. If I find myself in the library on campus because I'm doing research or something, then sometimes I'll go to the reference floor, where it is dead silent and maybe one other student there. The silence, in small amounts, can help me really focus on the material.

Eh. We have plenty of room in our library but there is lack of ventilation. So I usually end up studying in my room, my friends room, or the academic computer lab which has a nice study area and a starbuck's inside it 🙂

my room-I can count the amount of times I have been to my undergrad library (and I'm now a senior) on one hand, and all of those times have been because I was being nice and would accompany my friends/girlfriend

Usually library, study rooms, Starbucks. I can't focus in my room (too many distractions) and loud coffee shops are distracting as well, unless I'm only writing a paper or something.

Paradoxically, I actually wrote all my secondary essays at this one hipster coffee shop in Nashville this past summer. I needed the energy of the hustle and bustle to keep me on task.

I used to study in the library exclusively, but now I study in my room. I definitely need complete silence to do so, therefore I bought noise cancelling headphones which are AWESOME. I don't know how you guys do it, the slightest noise bugs the crap outta me.

What about 308? Haha...I have to switch it up or I zone out by staying in one place. I try not to study in my room...

My room. I put something boring on tv for background noise, and go to town. I sometimes go to the library, but not much. All of the research periodicals I need I can get from my school's website.

There's only one place on my campus that is open 24 hours for study purposes, but it gets too loud sometimes when there are group studies being held or when people are just obnoxious (it's a very small room). Once in a while I'll go into lab to study and just stay till late @ night. Starbucks is okay for late-night studying too. I cannot study in my room cause I'll fall asleep 🙂

I could never study at a starbucks. I get enough of it from work 😛 I like to study in my living room on the couch while watching tv. Been doing it that way since high school and it's gotten me very far 🙂

I have heard that it is fairly important to study in the same environment consistently, due to a type of behavioral conditioning. It's like sleep experts (md's) that say if you have problems sleeping, don't do anything in your bedroom (watch tv, play video games, etc...) other than sleep. This conditions the brain so that it knows that when you go into your bedroom it is time for sleep. Same with studying...conditioning your brain to understand that when you are in a particular environment then it is time to focus and study. Pick a spot and stick with it (if it works for you).

this is my first post 🙂
i love studying in starbucks, but i usually go there for reviewing when i kno have studied and can afford distractions!

i find it easy to sit at home and study when you know that you can go somewhere to review and chill later, like student lounge with mates n stuff or coffee shops, but i can never actually go there to start studying from scratch, far toooooo distracting, esp im in my first year of medicine, human structure 😱

I study primarily in my dorm room. I live in a single and therefore can easily study at anytime of the day and not be interrupted by a roommate. I need internet access (and music) when I study because I tend to supplement everything I learn with additional (probably unnecessary) material if I'm even slightly interested in what I am studying. The only time I study anywhere else is if my friends want me to keep them company while they study at the library/in their room/dorm hall/etc..Occasionally I do homework in our dorm hall's study lounge (20 second walk away) if it's quiet and I need a change of background.

I study primarly in the library, because I live in a double dorm room, so I never know just how loud or quiet or busy my roommate will be. Not to even mention that at odd hours in the night it gets insanely LOUD. The library is fine for me, but I find that if it gets too quiet, I fall asleep. Therefore, usually I study by the computers just so everyone else's typing can keep me awake, lol. 😛 That and I need to check my e-mail every hour or so, so I don't end up with an overflowing inbox. 😱

I mostly study in the library. But I tend to do the more difficult/involved things like papers in my room.

In my room and I lock the door and face the wall. The slightest shadow distracts me. Sometimes, I'll even wear noise-reducing earphones even when nobody's around. 🙁

Ideally, I would like to study with my peers. But no one likes me. People think I am weird. Just being present will empty a room. Basically, I can study anywhere because people have such an aversion for me. The world is where I study.

Jk, library/coffee shop/science building/outside/etc. I don't have a problem with noise or open spaces, so I study anywhere. I study with a group of peeps once a week to make sure I am on the right track.

I like studying in my living room with the TV on.... I like it with noises in the background. Complete silence somehow distracts me haha.

This is interesting, I have a really hard time focusing at home. I always get distracted with the things I always do here: laundry, dishes, TV, etc. Thank you for the info, 🙂 I'm really going to think of this in the future. I need to find somewhere that has a small amount of background noise but plenty of space to spread out.

at a desk with my pants and laptop off.

why would you ever be uncomfortable when you're alone?

I do most of my studying in the library, there's a small cafe there and a seat next to the window. It's quiet and there's no distractions which really helps.

If there are too many things to carry or it's late, i'll find a quite study lounge in my residence hall.

Can't really study in my room, i've done it a few times but the laptop really shouldn't be next to me if I am trying to study. 😛

Panera/Paradise. Free soda refills and wifi 🙂 Plus I can get food when I get hungry.

For me it's sort of a financial incentive since I know I just spent $x.xx for lunch instead of spaghetti and ketchup, I need to get my money's worth of studying done 😀

I've found I can't do Starbucks because I end up wanting to get a drink every hour and then it gets too expensive.

tutoring center... tutor in every subject all the time...
background noise of people going and coming..

I like studying at Borders, Barnes & Noble and Starbucks...I use the library once in a while..

honestly, i tried this once and it seemed like the people studying there were just trying to show people that they were studying.
