Where do or did you sit in class?

In a lecture hall of 100+ students?

In a regular class room?

Do you notice or believe that there is a correlation between where you sit and grades?

In a large lecture hall I sit dead center of the room, a few rows up and center of the row.
In a small class room I sit in the back.

I like sitting in the very first row when I can. But in very large classes (500+ students), I'm too lazy to work my way thru the people and make it there, so I just sit in the very last row and look up at the monitor they have, lol.

There is no correlation for me, but I could see how there could be. People talk more in the back, so you can't hear the Professor as well. You also can't see what the Professor is writing sometimes, especially if he has messy hand-writing.

I sat at the very back of my Algebra class and i was the only one to get the A+ among the 200 ppl in the class. Depends on the class though. For Psych or Soci u need to sit at the front to see whats up

There are those people who sit in the front row and ask questions all the time = A+. There are also people who sit in the front row because they can befriend those who get A+'s and hopefully get some tips before the tests = B+.

However, there are also those who doesn't even come to class but belong to the outliers on the far left of the bell curve = A++++. Simply too smart.

I belong to the people who sit in the middle. I would love to be close to the professors but not too close coz I don't want to be picked on lol I'm the spectator type who absorbs information through observations instead of participation. But grade point VS. where you sit can still vary a lot if you consider what's happening outside the classroom. So it really depends.

More concerned about lecture halls for biology and chemistry classes since those are the more important ones

i always sit either in the first or second row regardless of the class size/room size. I just feel like iam more engaged int he class if i sit close. Plus i always ask questions thus like to be up front!!! 🙂

LOL you know that there are more to getting A's than just where you sit in class, right? You obviously want to do all the readings, homeworks, and maybe attend all of the professors' office hours and ask questions.

Where you sit in class won't really correlate with getting good grades if you still engage in the professor's lecture/discussion and ask questions when you have doubts, and even form study groups if necessary. However, sitting in the front is good for asking questions because you won't feel the pressure from your peers who will just stare at you when you ask questions. I might find it embarrassing when my questions sound stupid, but if that's not a problem for you, just sit anywhere. You'll be fine.

Yes, I understand there's much more and I plan to do all that except maybe visit on office hours. But I believe where you sit gives a minor impression to the professor and so it's best to take advantage of the opportunity. It should help when the professors decides between an A and A+ Now I just need to pinpoint exactly where to sit would be e best.

For Ochem 112A, I sat way in the back and got an A. For 112B, I sat in the middle and got an A. For 112C, I sat in the first row and demolished the course with an A (the professor doesn't give out A+ -_-).

Front row center for each class, except o-chem. For o-chem, I sat front row center for the first half, then I moved to an aisle seat for the second half, so I can be the first to speak to the professor after class/walk him to his office.

My persistent a*s-kissing got me a crazy amazing reference letter.

Definitely continuing this strategy in dental school. Gunners for life.

My teacher back in High School (graduate of UCB) told me there was a correlation of students sitting in the front / back to their grades. She explained those who sat closer to the front got A's, and farther to the back, F's --- jokingly, of course!

I don't think there is a correlation. If there is, it's probably REALLY slight.

I am the person who would rather sit in front of the class.

For me, if I sit in the front, I can concentrate with full attention all time, even 3 hours of lecture.

However, there are too many distractions if I sit in the back (friends, gossips, laptops, fall into sleep, etc)

I used to always sit in the back. Now no matter what class size I try to sit in the front. Unless its in the 500+ person classes then I go to the balcony and sit in the front there cuz u can put ur feet up lol

in the back bc i like to have lots of space , put my bag & water bottle on one desk next to me. my jacket or sweater on the other. and i try to have a desk in front of me where i can put my feet....ummmmm.
also i sit toward the back bc i cannot stand the ppl who bring their laptop to class and type ferociously and pound on their keyboards on facebook chat or twitter or w/e during class and then simuntaneously rip oopen their food-bags of chipps, chomp on their crackers/cereal.....it drives me nuts so i try to drain it out by sitting far away ...

my university has a class capacity cap of 35 but the average class size is 22. sooooo there are no lecture halls. and usually if you're sitting in the back, you're still not that far from the front. and in all the humanities/non-science classes that I've had, we sat in a circle, thus no front or back.

but I usually sit in the front unless it's a class that i'm struggling in because I feel like if I sit in the front the teacher's going to call on me more and I'm not going to have any idea what's going on, so I sit in the second row to get the attention off of me...

If i go to class, I sit in the back all the time because the front is always packed. I like my space and leg room. I'm a tall guy. Also, when you want a seat in the front, you gotta come to class a little earlier. There's always that one person who comes to class late, sees a spot near the front in the middle of the row, and makes everyone move to get in there lol.

You know, sometimes study with a hot girl is a good motivation to do good in class. You dont want to tell her you are getting a C. She will leave you in a heart beat because its like you telling her i am driving a bicycle instead of a bike 😀

I actually had about a dozen different classes in the same room over 4 years and sat in the same seat for all of them. Creature of habit I guess.

I have been sitting in the front row. 2 reasons for this. One, it forces me to pay attention which helps me in getting a good grade and two, It allows me to have face time with the professor. He/She will see my face more often and it will help when I ask for letters of recommendations because they have seen my face every day.

I have tried sitting in the back, and I noticed people who don't give a crap about class usually are in the back. Always on their cellphones, talking, etc. and it distracts me...can't concentrate! When I sit in the front, I have no one in front of me to distract me.. plus the teacher stares at you so you kind of have to pay attention.

Which school is that, Carleton, McCallister, St Thomas? I am asssuming a MIAC school, but I am curious which one caps class size that low.
