Here is a scenario:

It is 11:30 pm, you have been studying for 7 hours (on and off with breaks) you know an extra hour will help, but you are tired of sitting, etc.

Where do you get your motivation from to go the extra mile? Just curious.

My motivation to do well come from within. No one else motivates me to do well except my self. I also believe that not one factor motivates me. It is a combination of everything from having the lifestyle that I want, not wanting to fail, doing well because I am paying a lot for this, pure love of learning, etc etc etc.

if its 11:30 pm, and i've put in 7 hours of studying...the only thing that'll keep me going the extra mile is a personality disorder

Go to bed or get a drink. After 7 hours, one more isn't going to make a huge difference.

Fear of failure, wanting a good future, not having to waste time repeating.

Ok jokes aside, sleep with your professors, and you woudln't be going through this.

just not wanting to fail and having to study everything again the next semester

determination and not wanting to have regrets in life.

seeing successful people and dying to be like them.
Wanting for people to look up to me, rather than looking up to them all the time.

Knowing that every little thing you do will be useful some point in time and nothing will go to waste. You get what you pay for, and you certainly get what you work for.

I have to be successful, I have to improve every aspect of myself...I dont want to be in the same place 5 years from now.

I have to have a stable career and be able to hold my head high.

Keep studying, it'll pay off, unless you're soooooooooo tired that you're about to drop, then go to sleep and nighty night.....dont let the Dental bugs bite..lol😴😴

For me it's usually aiming for the best grades I can get, keep focus on what I want as a career, and just think that suffering is just a natural process of dental school.

Not underachieving. I think one of the saddest thing is when someone does not perform to their potential.

I have always believed I was better then everyone else, I figured out I actually had to work a little in order to keep my appearance of superiority. This alone motivates me...

Actually, I have three children and a wife who has been working to support me, if I mess up I am letting down a lot more people then myself.

Maybe. For me, especially last semester, that extra hour was the difference in a couple of classes. I was so close that memorizing just a little more before sleepy land was enough for me to feel like I did my best.

The reason I ask is that I want to write an article on motivation and get some ideas of what motivates various people and what makes them rock the world of dentistry. Some are born brilliant others work hard for it and I want to know what drives them, besides what I know drives me.

Personally: Pride and Glory.
😀
Actually I want to learn everything possible to maximize my experiance, do my best - no regrets, like undergrad, and I seriously don't want to screw up someones mouth!! LIVE PEOPLE!😱😀

Please, keep them coming, and those of you who are lurking, come out of the closet and sign up for SDN and become an internet geek like the rest of us.

👍👍agreed! I have NEVER been able to pull an all-nighter...not in high school, college, and not so far in dental school. It would be a waste for me since I'd perform horribly without sleep and can't study when I'm tired anyway. I also can't go to sleep directly after studying or I get into this half-awake daze where the material floats around in my head.

But to answer your question in general and not be a complete bitch: 😀

~Think of dental school as your one job, and if you think of your life as having family/living area/clothes/food/JOB, it's your one shot at that major part of your life

~Think about how much time you have left compared to the rest of your life. If we all get our heads out of our asses, it's not much!! 👍

~Go put on your white coat and mask and gloves if you have to 😎

~I still say, let this one thing go. If you think that tomorrow's histo exam or the next day's crown prep comptenacy is the end of your life at dental school, you'll go through 4 years of panic attacks followed by the realization that each individual step isn't a huge deal. I was just going through my computer's folders for my first semester and was realizing how IMPORTANT all of that seemed and how even after just starting second year, it seems like sort of an intro step to moving out. I've practically forgotten it all 😀

I should also say that I am done for the year and am not looking for personal motivation to study that one extra hour, i have enough motivation. I am just interested.

When I say that 'extra hour', it is not just one night. I mean the whole marathon of dental school. When it comes down to the wire. You want to succeed, but sometimes it just plain sucks...so what keeps you going. The 'extra hour' was proverbial.

All good responses so far.👍

Same here, i've never pulled an all nighter.
I make sure and get my 8 hrs of sleep a night ,no matter what.

Plan your studying ahead of time.Last semester was pretty rough , and I made a study time table, how many hours of what, and how much per day I wanted to do.
I tried my best to keep to it, when exams rolled around , I was much more at ease than most of my classmates.

I did this as well. I didn't actually write down a schedule or make a spreadsheet, but at the beginning of every week I would mentally decide which 2 or so subjects to study which evening. Since you're taking 10 courses a semester, and your exams are either spread out or done as blocks, you'll be fine spending a really solid hour or two on 2 subjects every evening. The trick is to find the right time before an exam. If it's too far away, you'll forget enough of the material that you'll have to stud it all over again and it was wasted. However, it's really easy to let it pile up and have too much to study in the time before the exam.

So planning it mentally is key!
