Where else are you interviewing?

I would probably lie and name off all of the top programs in your field. That'll impress them...

Actually, I'd just suggest you be honest. A lot of times the interviewers are just making chit chat. Although sometimes they want to see how broadly you have applied and if they are the "odd ball" program on your list of invites. I.e. all of your interviews are at southern programs and you are interviewing in NYC. The program will probably ask you what the draw to NYC is with all of your interviews located other, very dissimilar places. Be prepared with an answer.

I'm always very vague a first...such as,"in various states," or "midwest," "east and west coast," ect.

some people have left it as that, however, some have gone fishing for a more detailed answer, in which case I spill the beans but remain as vague as possible with it coming off smooth (ideally).

One interviewer persisted until I named all the programs... whatever. I just don't like to lie. All it takes is for them to pick up the phone and check your information. In which case your stooped if they caught you in a lie.

i answer honestly, although i highlight other programs in that geographic region. i agree that usually it's just making small talk, not something malicious. programs realize we apply broadly much of the time for various reasons.
