Ok guys here goes. I have seen everyone asking where to apply for residency, where are the best residencies and so on. Well my question is since I am a US born FMG attending Ross I would like to hear opinons of those who know for sure which programs won't take FMG's. I would like to hear from others in my position who know first hand of programs that won't even look at your application. Thanks for all of your help.

Check out EMRAMATCH.ORG they have a collection of sorveys filled out by cheif residents at about 1/3 of all the programs. On the survey, in addition to some great info, are stats on how many FMG's (& DO's) programs have currently and in the last five years.

Hope this helps!!

Agreed. That is your best bet! Its only a year old but I think most programs have inputed their info. Speaking of, I'm the person to do that for my website, I better update it.

Q, DO

I applied to start in July 2001. I am now completing my residency.

I came from a lesser-known school at that time who had not placed many students into EM residencies. Schools like Ross and St. Georges which have been around longer seem to have a better track-record.

When I applied, I think I hit up 47 programs and was only offered 4 interviews. I am still waiting to hear from about 6-10 programs whether I receive an interview or they just don't want me as they did not get back to me. I know that board scores were much better than many of the people I was "competing with" and they got a lot more interviews. However, in the end, I am glad I only had 4 interviews....less to travel, less to confuse when ranking, and I matched at a truly great program which has prepared me exceptionally well.

With that being said, there are 2 programs out there which left me with a really sour taste.

York in York, PA. Just had my common application downloaded from ERAS when I got my rejection. Never looked at letters of rec, board scores, etc. Just got the rejection. If they are that superficial when looking at applicants, are they that superficial when looking at their patients? I mean, not all chest pain is the same, have to delve into it in order to find out about it.

St. Luke's in PA. I asked about observing as a medical student just for a day. They told me that it was unlikely they would ever take a FMG. I told them I was not asking for residency, I just wanted to observe. Just left me with a really bad feeling.

With that being said, there are plenty of programs that will look at IMGs. Some more than others. Look to see who has IMGs. Look to see where people from your school have matched recently.

Even with my negative experiences, I was able to do what I always wanted to do, and it did not hinder me with my post-grad plans.

Good luck

Having worked with the people there extensively I can tell you that they do not. In fact they are VERY DO friendly with several as residents and as attendings.

That, AND the Program Director has a trophy wife. Reason enough for a DO or FMG to apply there!
