I applied to start in July 2001. I am now completing my residency.
I came from a lesser-known school at that time who had not placed many students into EM residencies. Schools like Ross and St. Georges which have been around longer seem to have a better track-record.
When I applied, I think I hit up 47 programs and was only offered 4 interviews. I am still waiting to hear from about 6-10 programs whether I receive an interview or they just don't want me as they did not get back to me. I know that board scores were much better than many of the people I was "competing with" and they got a lot more interviews. However, in the end, I am glad I only had 4 interviews....less to travel, less to confuse when ranking, and I matched at a truly great program which has prepared me exceptionally well.
With that being said, there are 2 programs out there which left me with a really sour taste.
York in York, PA. Just had my common application downloaded from ERAS when I got my rejection. Never looked at letters of rec, board scores, etc. Just got the rejection. If they are that superficial when looking at applicants, are they that superficial when looking at their patients? I mean, not all chest pain is the same, have to delve into it in order to find out about it.
St. Luke's in PA. I asked about observing as a medical student just for a day. They told me that it was unlikely they would ever take a FMG. I told them I was not asking for residency, I just wanted to observe. Just left me with a really bad feeling.
With that being said, there are plenty of programs that will look at IMGs. Some more than others. Look to see who has IMGs. Look to see where people from your school have matched recently.
Even with my negative experiences, I was able to do what I always wanted to do, and it did not hinder me with my post-grad plans.
Good luck
