hey everyone,

Having a difficult time picking which DO schools to apply to so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm a Michigan resident.

MCAT: 26 (physical 9, verbal 10, bio 7)
GPA: both are a 3.1
Community service: 1000 hours
Shadowing: 450 hours
Scribing: 300 hours

Currently involved in research projects that will be published within the next year. Also I'm taking 20 credits worth of post bac 300+ level science courses. This is my second time applying.

Thanks!

EDIT: I compiled a list of schools. What are everyone's thoughts about my chances with this list?

MSUCOM
Marian
Pacific Northwestern
West Virginia
Pikeville
Edward Via- Auburn, Carolinas and Virginia
Kansas City
Alabama
A.T. Still U-Arizona
Campbell
LMUDCOM
LECOM

How late did you apply last time or were you picky? I reckon should have gotten in somewhere with those if you were broadly applying.

I applied in early June but I didn't have the research or scribing and wasn't enrolled in post-bac classes.

I applied to MSUCOM, LECOM (both), PCOM (both), LMUDCOM, ACOM and NYit

Hmmm frankly you should have applied to more.

But yes thats good you have clinical hours, although they do want direct patient contact hours now. I think lecom want a 8 atleast in each subsection.

Wvsom is another one to consider...

Could you give me a list of schools I'd be competitive at?

Same MCAT score (26) but much higher GPA (3.7). Here was the outcome of the schools:
- LECOM (both) - REJECTED
- PCOM (PA) - WAITLIST, (GA) - REJECTED
- LMU-DCOM - REJECTED
- NYIT - Never heard from them. Silent rejection I guess.
- ACOM - Offered interview, but declined.

I was accepted to ATSU-KCOM, Nova Southeastern and am likely to get off the wait list at Touro-NV. I was also offered an interview at Campbell (turned down) and VCOM-CC (turned down).

Do what you will with that info. But, I agree, you should apply to more schools with a 26, 3.1.

Your BS 7 sub-score could be a problem, I'd suggest applying to as many schools as you can afford to (15+ if possible).

Do you think I would have a decent shot at all the schools you listed if I get above a 3.5 in all my post bac work?

Make sure you match the mission of the school. I think with a 3.3 overall, you should have a pretty decent shot at schools where your application and their mission match.

Surprised you got rejected at lmu, seriously this DO admissions business baffles me...

That's the goal, my only other commitment will be research so I'm really confident that I can get 4.0s. I was just saying above a 3.5 as a lowball.

Do whatever you possibly can in your power to get the highest grades possible during a post-bac. I wouldn't particularly recommend a significant research commitment during this time. 3.5's aren't going to be good enough with your stats. You really need to aim for 3.7+.

I would strongly consider re-taking the MCAT. A 7 bio score is a clear red flag and if you can get a 10 in verbal there is no doubt you should be able to do better than a 7 on the bio section.

My research commitment is typically under 10 hours a week and the rest of my time will be devoted to studying. If I choose to still not retake my MCAT, what schools do you think my odds would be the best at?

A good portion of my admission cycle made no sense. I interviewed at Mt. Sinai and was rejected outright from LECOM.

I should mention going into the cycle, I was really hoping for LECOM-Bradenton. Given PBL, low tuition and a friend of mine has a vacation home in the area that he said I could use rent free, it would have great. Oh well!

Thanks! I changed my list to the one you gave, will I run into any major regional bias issues with BCOM or Wm Carey?

BCOM is a brand new school so they can't afford to be choosy. I have yet to hear of any regional bias for WCU.

Thanks again! Do you think I have a decent shot of getting into at least one school?

Getting interviews? Yes. Getting accepted? That's on you.

That puts my mind at ease a little. I didn't receive any last year and I'm confident that once I'm in the room I can convince the committee I'm the right candidate.

The Bio7 is going to hurt though. Suggest a retake of MCAT. You've got time. I assume that you have a DO LOR? or at least shadowed a DO?
