[Edited after realizing I forgot extracurriculars]

I am finishing a post-bacc year, and I am applying in June of 2011. I am writing this in anticipation (SMP has not been done, rest has been done) to get an idea of where I should apply and to how many schools I should apply. My main purpose in posting this is to be able to estimate the costs I will incur in applying so I can judge how much I need to continue to take out in student loans over the next year.

Undergrad at top 15 School, B.A. in Mathematics

undergrad GPA = 2.59, undergrad bcpmGPA = 2.07 (hot)

MCAT: First time 25O, Second time 33O (12P, 11V, 10B).

One year (two summers, one fall and one spring) post-bacc work in Biology (one physics class taken also, orgo 1 and 2 retaken also). Courses taken include Immunology, Cell Biology, Human Physiology, Biochemisty, Microbiology. All courses taken are BCPM.

postbac GPA = 3.914, postbac BCPM GPA = 3.914

SMP completed at New Jersey Medical School (my state school)
GPA ~3.7. "A" Grade in Molecular & Genetic Medicine - a course taken with MS1 students.

One summer of research in a neuroscience lab at New Jersey Med School - LOR from PI who (redundant but there's a point) works at New Jersey Med School.

Two years of clinical research (will be three years when I apply) in the department of medicine at New Jersey Med School - LOR from my PI who is one of the Deans of New Jersey Med School. During these two years I have been named "investigator" on multiple NIH-funded HIV studies for which I have screened patients, mined patient data from charts, and conducted testing on patients (don't want to get too detailed). This has given me significant patient interaction.

I Will be published as 3rd author on at least two papers - I will be asking soon if they will be published by the time I apply.

During my time at NJMS I have had the opportunity to shadow in multiple specialties (IM, ID, Cardiology, Pediatrics).

In addition to my 2 LOR's from faculty at NJMS, I hope to gain an additional NJMS LOR from an NJMS professor during my SMP.

During undergrad, I was Fundraising Chair and member of the executive committee of our Relay for Life. Under my tenure money raised went from ~310k to 400k. Prior participation in R4L from 2002 to 2007 (i was fund. chair in 2008), and a team captain in 2006 and 2007. Will continue involvement.

President of the largest cultural organization on campus, after spending a first year on the executive board. I was instrumental in creating large changes to the organization in the name of promoting equality and inclusion amongst students. I also used my position to create majors and programs in [insert my culture here] Studies at my school.

Played in a band for three years, Vice President of an A Capella Group.

Do you guys have any recommendations for me? Thank you for taking a look at my information. Clearly, I am hoping to get into NJMS - but I realize that with my poor undergrad grades I will have to apply broadly.

What is your cumulative overall and science GPA after including the post-bacc classes?

I can't tell you authoritatively how many schools to apply to, and will leave that to those who've applied after an SMP, but it would depend on your GPA during the SMP, I'd think.

From what you've mentioned it appears that your biggest lack is in regular community service (nonmedical/noncampus-related). When one has a serious weakness, like GPA it is a good strategy to compensate by being strong in ECs. Your research will be terrific and well above average, and has been an excellent source of patient interaction to provide clinical patient experience. (Does it also give you clinical environment experience, too, though?) Your shadowing sounds fine. What about teaching and leadership, two other very desirable areas to have as activities? And don't forget hobbies, sports, and artistic endeavors to make you look interesting and well-rounded.

The head of admissions of my SMP, when we spoke regarding admissions to the SMP, stated that medical schools (or, perhaps, just NJMS) will consider my post-bacc GPA seperate from my undergrad GPA and would not average them in just like a 5th year of college. This came as a surprise to me, as a couple years on SDN had led me to believe otherwise. If anyone would like to discuss this further, feel free to. At any rate, I below provide those statistics in my case.

GPA after post-bacc has been raised from 2.59 to 2.87
BCPM after post-bacc has been raised from 2.07 to 2.64

[Note: The below information has been edited into my original post]

Forgive me for neglecting to include that - I knew I forgot something.

During undergrad, I was Fundraising Chair and member of the executive committee of our Relay for Life. Under my tenure money raised went from ~310k to 400k. Before this, I had participated in relay for life from 2002 to 2007 (i was fund. chair in 2008), and a team captain in 2005 and 2006. I should probably do relay again this year, firstly because I believe in it, and secondly to maintain that consistency!

I was also president of the largest cultural organization on campus, after spending a first year on the executive board. I was instrumental in creating large changes to the organization in the name of promoting equality and inclusion amongst students.

In terms of sports/hobbies, I have sacrificed my life over the last couple years and will continue to do so. The only other leisure activity in which I partake besides seeing my friends once every few weeks is working out every other day. And SDN? Fail.

On second thought, I will be listing under "employment" that I was in a band for two years in college. I used to play an instrument. And was vice president of an a capella group. Ah, college. When I had a life.

Apply EARLY and BROADLY.. I would say all your state schools plus schools in your region (east coast I assume).. Definitely apply to more than 20 schools (and immediately complete all 20 secondaries if you get them) with your stats because I doubt you want to risk underapplying and then having to reapply the next year. This process is HELL so I chose to do it once and ensure an acceptance somewhere by applying EARLY and BROADLY! Good Luck! 👍

Thanks medat101. I was kind of hoping that I'd get more than one response, however, if I posted my life story on the 'what are my chances' board.

Anyone able to provide me with a second opinion?

Might anyone be able to give an estimate of the number of secondaries I should expect to receive if I apply to ~25 medical schools (is this broadly? Should I do more than 25?). And an estimate as to the amount of interviews I would receive?

I know you guys are not a crystal ball 🙂 But hopefully I can get a better estimate on my cost of applying after hearing your thoughts on how many secondaries and interviews I might receive. Any other opinions or recommendations also welcome

I don't think anyone has any idea. I definitely don't. My guess is you'll get secondaries from most schools bc they don't screen for the most part.

It all depends and each situation is different. I know people with your similar numbers who applied to 20ish schools, and got 3 interviews. But then again, my numbers/life story are a little different than yours and I applied broadly and early to 30ish schools, completed 20ish secondaries, and got about 18 interviews. I only attended 12 of the 18 once I got my first round of acceptances in October. The good thing is, once you start getting interviews and realize how much the med schools want you (cross fingers), you can afford to be more picky on which interviews you actually attend. So, don't worry so much about these details now. Just FOCUS on perfecting your personal statement and the rest of your application!!!

Realize, the med school application process is EXPENSIVE, so be prepared to spend tons on secondaries and interviews.
