Do you want to be a DO? If so, is there a reason you want to do a gap year besides trying to improve your application? Unless your sGPA is much lower than your cGPA I would say don't do the gap year and just go for it. Where to apply first starts with where would you be happy living/going to school.

My advice is to not apply to SMPs. If you want to improve your GPA, some classes as a post-bacc.

I wouldn't mind becoming a DO, but MD would be more preferable. I am taking a gap year because I am under the impression there is no way for me to matriculate into an MD or DO school this August. Isn't way too late to apply? I am pursuing for an acceptance for the c/o 2019 now. My sGPA isn't too much lower than my cum gpa, its ~3.25. And I would prefer to be in state but I am open to any school really.

If your dead set on MD and are going to do an SMP why did you post in pre-Osteo? I'm confused.

If you want to apply DO as a back up you are middle of the line stat wise so I'd say you have a shot anywhere, but would cast a broad net to better your chances.

Currently I am applying to Rosalind Franklin University's Biomedical Sciences (BMS) program, I don't know if that is an actual SMP or not. However, from my research the program matriculates 50-60 (out of 110) of its BMS graduates into their M1 class and it is an allopathic school. If I do get into the program, as of now I plan to matriculate and apply to DO schools concurrently.

So that if I do not get into their M1 class, I have at least an acceptance into a DO school.

I apologize for the confusion, I'm not deadset on MD. I would just prefer MD over DO. I am applying this upcoming cycle and I want to know what DO schools I should apply to with my current gpa/mcat.

My main concern is getting into a medical school this upcoming cycle.

Depends on where you want to be geographically, but since you are a NJ resident I will recommend some of the schools in the Northeast. UMDNJ (Rowan), UNE, NYCOM, PCOM, Touro-NY, LECOM-Erie. I had similar stats and applied very broadly to DO schools this cycle and it turned out well for me. Goodluck!

A little about myself, I am a graduating senior and this upcoming cycle will be my first time applying. With that being said, I will be taking a gap year and I am currently applying to SMPs. My first two years of college were rough but after that I have kept pretty much an upward trend. Received A's in upper level biology courses such as: Physiology, Histology, and Biochemistry.

ECs: I have over a year of research experience in clinical psychology but do not have any publications. I am currently a shadow/volunteer in an Emergency Department of a Level 1 Trauma Center. I taught physiology as a tutor for a year at my university's learning center. I have shadowed a DO and numerous MDs. I have also volunteered abroad in a rural clinic.

I am considering retaking my MCAT, however which schools would I be competitive for if I decided not to retake?

My sGPA is a 3.258 and thank you for the advice I could definitely retake some courses this summer.

Yes, it is too late for this cycle. Just get everything ready and apply as early as possible, by June if you can, to matriculate next August. Your cGPA, sGPA, MCAT, and ECs are fine. Doing a SMP isn't necessary if you're applying DO. It's necessary if you hope to get into MD schools, but that's because they don't factor in grade forgiveness, etc. SMPs are just another expensive and rather unnecessary hurdle unless getting into certain schools really matters to you.
