There are 3 main philosophies that people may consider to pick where to do the aways:
1. Reach/dream programs: With a solid application (yours will be once you have research), this is a great choice. If there's a program (or 2) that you want to go to, do aways there.
2. Breaking into a region: If you have a history of being in a particular state your whole life, doing an away in another state can open up the entire region for interview season. It does not seem like you're interested in this.
3. Red Flags/Need to match: If there's a red flag on your application, picking lower-tier/realistic programs is a good choice for aways.
Once your application has a good amount of ophtho research, I think you'd probably benefit from the first choice. Good luck!
