Where to get experience when your institution lacks a residency program

I am interested a specialty that doesn't have a residency or a department at my home institution. Any recommendations one where to get experience? There is one private group of practitioners, but how likely are they willing to mentor a student when they are not apart of the medical school?

If you explain your sincere interest in the field one of them could be interested in showing you more about their field. Are there any other med schools in your area?
