If you're going to be an incoming M1 you could just wait until your school has an "equipment" fair where Welch-Allyn and Littman cut you a deal on their steths. I think it was at least a little cheaper than allheart, and you didn't have to worry about shipping.
eBay. Got a great deal on a Littmann, like $50 off. People are always getting these for gifts, etc., so they are unloading ones that are new, in the box.
p.s. stethoscope=reflex hammer, unless you are on neurology.
Get what you want, but don't think you have to get a Littman. I used one of those no name single tube $12 specials and it never hurt me on the floor. I got mine at some nursing shop in a mall, but allheart.com has good prices. If you end up going into cardiology or something, you can upgrade later.
DO NOT buy from AllHeart. I had a terrible experience with them. I placed 4 separate orders for all of my equipment, totaling almost $1000. I was never told when things were out of stock. There is no phone number to call and speak to a person. There is no way to check the status of your order and what may be holding it up. You can only send them an email and then you are at their mercy if they feel like replying or not.
AllHeart seems like a small business that cuts prices drastically in the hope of making up for it on sale volume. The problem is that they don't seem to have the employees necessary to deal with that volume, and costumer service goes down the crapper. And about my order? I ended up having to cancel most of it after many back and forth emails and a complete lack of communication on their part. One personalized bag took 10 weeks to finally get to me when their site says it takes 10 days! I'm not sure how they stay in business.
Do yourself a favor and pay the few extra dollars to buy your equipment elsewhere. I got my steth straight from Welch Allyn who has amazing student prices and even throws in a free pediatric kit, along with extra diaphragms and ear pieces. Your school probably will have a sale to buy equipment so you may want to ask one of the second years about that also.
I have only gone to their store in west LA, so I guess I should have qualified the recommendation. If you can find a nursing shop in your area that is usually a good spot for a nice cheap stethoscope and they will also have stuff like BP kits (if your school makes you buy one) as well as good extras like trauma shears and bandage scissors that will come in handy on the wards (make sure you label them with at least some tape if you want to increase your chance of hanging on to them)
