Hey everyone, Heres my situation I will be attending Western this fall (YES!!) and my wife will begin her Psyd program at Pepperdines western LA campus. My question is where is a good spot to live in between the campuses that would be near the middle for both of us, and that is fairly safe? Any suggestions would be appreciated since we are moving from Washington and don't know the area.

The midway point between the two schools is the east LA area. Traffic for both of you will be bad.

I would check out Monterey Park, La Habra, Whittier or Rowland Heights (Fergie's hometown). I have a friend commuting to Glendale from Rowland Heights and always complains about the traffic.

Good luck finding a place.

tricky situation there. the two locations are pretty far apart and there's no easy place to pick where to live. above poster is right about east LA being your central point, but it's not the greatest of places to live in.

it's mostly suburban areas near western's campus...you have cities like west covina, diamond bar, rowland/hacienda hts - all are at least middle class suburban areas.

moving further west towards pepperdine will be areas like monterey park/alhambra and those areas are not as nice and pretty crowded older areas in my opinion.

there's always downtown LA which is becoming nicer by the month...lots of new development there. would be a pretty easy commute for your wife but a crazy commute for you.

bottom line, there's gonna be lots of different factors you're gonna have to figure out - which campus you'd rather be closer to/neighborhood area/price/traffic/etc.

just as a general trend...traffic will be bad going towards to downtown LA in the mornings and bad going away from downtown LA in the afternoons/evenings. traffic sucks in LA =]

Something else to consider: after the first 12 weeks or so (gross anatomy and head and neck have quizzes every day and you have to go to lab), you won't have to be on campus at Western every day. You can Apreso on days we don't have sim clinic and stay at home. That would work for 1st and 2nd year, 3rd year you'll be on campus a lot, then 4th year we basically just work and you could pick somewhere closer to your place.

Lived in this area my whole life. Can answer all questions, but Pasadena would honestly be the best bet! About half way for each of you 🙂 and nice, safe, beautiful area!

PS.. I'll be you neighbor at Loma Linda University and have many friends that go to western 🙂

Thank you everyone for the advice! Traffic sounds like it will be terrible, I'm going to deffinatly check out Pasadena and maybe some areas in west LA so that hopefully I will be going against the traffic. Keep the good advice coming guys I really appreciate it.

Sounds like an argument for studying dentistry on line.

Metrolink drops you off approx 0.2 miles away from Western. You could try to live close to a station so you don't get stuck in traffic for 2 hrs. I don't know how dependable metrolink is, I have never tried it. Good luck, and don't let the road rage get to you.😡

And post #3 must be the perfect example of your preaching.

Post #3 is me simply stating that I would like people to help answer the question. Those people who post without anything constructive to say, or to simply up their number of posts, need not post! Thanks again to those who have positively contributed to the thread.

Well Pepperdine is in Malibu, pretty much as far west as you go in LA. And Western is in Pomona, which is way East. Those two are 60 miles apart, so the mid line between the two puts you near Downtown or a little bit east of there.
