Hi,

I'm an M1 doing research over the summer at bascom palmer eye Institute and was wondering where a good place to stay would be. I hope someone on this forum had done research over the summer there or goes there for residency and could help me out. Thanks!

Depends on how much money you have. Coral Gables has some ok areas and some not so ok areas. If you have lots of money, Miami Beach is fine. Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach is farther away but is less crowded than Miami Beach. The two cities are too far away for residents but ok for research people.

Elian Gonzales, the little boy whose front door was knocked down by the feds in order to send him back to Cuba, used to live in not so far away Little Havana.

Here's what I did... The University of Miami has a page on their website that students (or anyone) can list their apartments for rent, sublets, condos, whatever. Pretty broad, some are looking to rent places out for a whole year, some for a couple months. Even some of the rental agencies list on this site. If you're doing what I did, you only need a place for a couple months. It ended up being sort of a challenge to find a place for such a short time, but I ended up getting a place after calling a lot of people through this listing, like a couple weeks before I moved down! I did have to have a roommate though, which ended up being fine. I lived in an apartment building in South Miami (basically Coral Gables) called the Cloisters on SW 57th Ave. (Red Rd.), right next to UM main campus. It was ideal with over 90% college students living there. Made tons of friends. Gotta have a car though (Bascom can hook you up with cheap parking right next to the eye center).

My backup plan: There's a Days Inn that's just a block or two south of Bascom, easy walking distance, and they will rent to you for a couple months at a reduced rate. Here's the info on that...

Days Inn
1050 NW 14th Street
Civic Center
Miami, FL, 33136
US
305-324-0200

That UM housing website is...

http://www.sa.miami.edu/off-campus-services/off-campus-housing/frmSearch.aspx

Start looking at that listing now. And call places even though they don't fit your criteria, sometimes they can be negotiable. I would even pay more (within reason) than what I originally decided to if it came down to it, it's worth it. Good luck down there, most likely it'll be the best experience you've ever had.

Look on Craigs List...I had a great Miami Beach condo for $800/month close to South Beach. Great location...short trip to Bascom!

Thanks for the replies guys! I will definately look into it!
A few additional questions:

Who did you guys work with at Bascom and how was it? Any particulars I should know? Feel free to PM me if you prefer that to posting.

Do you reccomend I have a car while I am there, or is the public transport pretty reliable?

Thanks again!

Hi there,
I'm currently an MS II and spent last summer working in Dr. Abigail Hackam's Lab. I lived on Biscayne Boulevard and 64ST Terrace, which is about ten minutes away from Bascom Palmer. What you DO NOT want to do is live anywhere near Coral Gables or south of Bascom Palmer because you'll get stuck in traffic for at least an hour minimum each way. The coral gables area has really cheap housing, you can rent an apartment for like $400 a month or less but I decided to live right near Bascom and get a fully furnished 1 bedroom apartment for $850 a month and not worry about the long commuting time. I rented from this lady named Elfriede Oth, you can google her and get her contact info. She's an artist and has her own company so she has her own website. She has a ton of properties right near the Bascom Palmer area and she does short term month to month leases. Trust me, its better to pay more and live near the school. You can also live on South Beach, its also only 10 minutes away from Bascom Palmer. The main thing is getting a month to month lease. Where I was located I was also 5 minutes away from South Beach. I hope this info helps. The worst case scenario is that you can just stay at a hotel nearby, there's some on Bicayne Boulevard near where I lived. Good luck at Bascom Palmer, you'll love it. I didn't get anything published but it definitely was a great experience and everyone is really friendly. By the way, who are you going to be doing research with?
