I'm starting to look at residency programs and I'm trying to narrow it down based on geography. I know I want to live on a coast, city on the water with warm weather. Does anyone have any good recommendations of cities? I love the beach and very much of a water person. Don't want a small town. Also need to be able to afford lving there.

Not a lot of places on the East Coast near the water and warm weather besides Miami and Tampa. And even then, you pretty much have U Miami and USF.

There are a lot more programs on the West Coast that meets your criteria.

It'll also depend on where you go to med school. If you are from an East Coast school, more East Coast programs will be friendly towards your application and vice versa with West Coast programs.

Unfortunately most of those west coast programs in large metro areas (i.e. SF Bay Area, LA, San Diego) fail his criteria on the affordability. Santa Barbara, aside from not being a very large city, is about as far from affordable as you can imagine. You could always live out quite a ways and commute I guess. You can afford to live in all of these cities of course, but maybe not quite in the same style to which you're currently accustomed.

Medical Univ. of South Carolina is in Charleston, on the coast, very affordable compared with California

What field are you planning on entering?

santa barbara affordable?!

parts of san diego are affordable to rent in and not too far from the water.

Thanks so much for everyone's replies. So far I'm most interested in family practice but I'm still undecided because I have yet to finish all my major rotations. I'm from Missouri which doesn't help my odds for a coastal residency I suppose, but I'm just really ready to get out of the midwest. Again I love the water and would like to live in a city on the water. And cost of living is an issue, because as we all know we don't make much money during residency. Don't need a huge city or small town just something in between.

where you go to medical school when it comes to applying for residency........go to scutwork.com, check out residency programs. When you find ones that sound good, go to the local papers in that area and check out housing prices. That is how I went about compiling my list of residency app choices. I am not set on a particular geographic location, but cost of living is huge to me.......makes no sense that living in Boston I would be making the same salary as if I live in Podunk, Midwest somewhere...........😉

Very important question...

The Gulf Coast:

Galveston, TX- U. Texas
New Orleans, LA- LSU, Tulane, Oschner
Mobile, AL- U. South Alabama
Tampa, FL- U. South FL

Southeast Atlantic:

Miami, FL- U. Miami
Jacksonville, FL- UF-Jax
Savannah, GA- Memorial
Charleston, SC- Medical Univ. of SC

What specialty are you going to apply for?

I hear you because I am in residency now and miss the coast horribly. I lived by the coast for several years and the novelty never wore off- I loved the water as much the day that I left as the day that I arrived.

When I finish up here, it will be a huge priority of mine to park myself right by a beach.
