co-author of 3 abstracts published and presented (I did not present them) at the Society for Neuroscience. This goes under publications right? Also, the abstracts are long so i was gonna actually enter them as separate activities. Good idea, right?

Also, got one aknowledgment (for 'experimental assistance') from a paper "published" online at "nature precedings". "nature precedings," is a 'journal' for preliminary data and such. This is worth noting in the activity section, yeah?

thanks guys. (and gals)

oh, and if i'm a research tech in a research lab could I put it under research/lab rather than paid experience - not military?

Publications are exclusively for published full articles. Not abstracts.

Acknowledgements unfortunately don't go for a whole lot - your abstracts would be more valuable. But if you have space, sure, everything counts. Abstracts would go under Conferences Attended, if you went, Posters/Presentations, if you helped make the poster (since you say you didn't present), or simply under Lab/Research.

Yes Research tech for research/lab.

Hmm...

As long as you're clear and label it "Abstract Only" I don't see a problem listing under publications.

am a co-author on a few abstracts for the society for neuroscience national conferences.

For the first conference, I attended but did not present (2008 Washington) and for the upcoming conference (2009 Chicago) I will attend and present.

Do you consider abstracts publications because they are published in the conference books that list the abstracts for every presentation OR because they have in addition been published somewhere else? As far as I know, my abstracts have only been published in the conference agenda books and nowhere else...is this a publication?

How should I treat a poster presentation that I was a co-author on but did not present myself? ( I had one of my research projects accepted for the 2009 National Conference for Undergraduate Research but I was unable to attend because of an urgent family obligation)- I was the first author and the project was presented by one of the secondary authors...what should I do with this?

Great, then you can list the first as Conferences Attended, and the second as Posters/Presentations.

Technically, it is a publication. But this is not the publication a medical school adcom is looking for per se. I'll address this again in my response to Jonathan MD in a minute.

Posters/Presentations. This category is for posters and/or presentations. You could talk about this in passive voice, and then clarify. "I was first author of a poster entitled blah blah blah. This poster was presented at the 2009 NCUR. Although unable to attend due to family emergency, the presenter received positive feedback about our project."

Be up front with it. No one is going to hate you for any of the things we are talking about. They are all Tier 4 of 5 (Tier 5 being publication) accomplishments in terms of research.

Technically, it is a publication. But this is not the publication a medical school adcom is looking for per se. But many adcoms who do initial screenings/scorings do not go into the actual work and activities. They will fly through the categories in order to score the application. When they see publication, it will be scored differently (i.e. higher) than conferences attended or posters/presentations. Then, later, in scrutiny, when it turns out there was indeed a "false alarm" publication entry, some reviewers may be at least mildly annoyed. You don't want them thinking you are making "convenient mistakes." At least, this is my view.

You might be right.

I guess I tend to place less importance on the application and more importance on the interview. Turn in the application to get an interview. And during the interview explain everything thoroughly and honestly.

Publications are for full peer reviewed articles only please.

Haha that is understandable. But hey, at least now you know! 😀

I believe it's acceptable to list other publications as well. I'll extract some words from LizzyM, one of SDN's regular adcomm posters 6/18/07:

Quote:
How about a publication in a literary journal?
This might look like padding if the journal is an campus publication circulated just on campus. If it is widely circulated (e.g. Tin House, American Short Fiction, The Georgia Review) then you should certainly list it.

Thanks again Mobius. I have been addressing this thread as scientific publications only. Of course, any literary publications are fair game, but be sure to indicate it is journalism, not research.
