Arrgh.... I have been trying so hard to get in touch with DOs in my are to try and do some shadowing but I have had no luck. I have actually had an easier time finding an MD to shadow. I've sent latters and even called. I'm in baltimore, and I've used the DO finder thing from the AOA website and still no luck.

I beleive a letter from a DO is important for me although I have read much
osteopathic stuff,

What can I do to help me find a DO to shadow and write me a letter?

Maybe try that mentor thing through the AOA? I dont know if thats what you are reffering to when you say you searched on the AOA page.

Blast from the past.

I tried the mentor thing through AOA and all it did for me was made me waste time. Not only they made me wait forever( saying they forwarded my request to DOs in their data system who agreed to have pre-meds shadow them etc.) but when i emailed them to ask on the status of my inqury they never replied (still nothing as of now...and it was back in february!).

This is one of the osteopathic medicine things that needs to be changed....they need to do a little more promoting and let the prospective students have some access to DOs available to shadow.

So i finally had luck finding a DO when i started searching the webs of all the major university hospitals in the area. This is also neat way of finding a successful DO who might also be a professor etc.
If you live by any big universities that have a hospital try doing a doctor search on the hospital web. If you find a DO with an email adress you are home.
Good luck.

Hmm...I had luck when I tried it. I found a few people who responded and we've had several questions back and forth. They have been a great resource for me. I'm sorry that they haven't for others. It's a place to start though.

hmm...i just went to the phonebook, looked up a DO, called her, and then shadowed her for a couple months 🙂

good luck

yeah i was very surprised, because the lady i first wrote too seemed very nice. But after waiting for about 6 weeks i emailed her again asking how long does it usually take for a DO to respond to my request. She emailed me back saying that sometimes it takes couple of weeks...that was back in february...i am yet to hear from them🙄
I emailed her again back in March asking why it's taking so long and that if they are not able to find anyone then i would appreaciate them to let me know so i will have time to think of some alternative ways of finding a DO to shadow...she never emailed me back!😡
Maybe it's just a Chicago AOA thing but this was my expiriance.

thanks God that instead of sitting on my a$$ and waiting i found my DO by myself couse i would be waiting forever 😴

The end justifies the means. 🙂

I predict you're going to do really well this next cycle.

well i am freaking out about this.
I am non-trad, my GPA sucks (since i am in US by myself as an immigrant from Poland it was quite hard to split myself into two ppl--->student and financial supporter of myself 😳...and i am still signed up for the MCAT battle so we will see😀 ).

I just really want to go to CCOM.
But I hope i will get any love next cycle.
I am getting kinda old too and i wouldn't really want to wait any longer...and since i am not taking a "no" for an answer i will apply 10 x if i have to...so not getting any younger is also sometimg to freak out about

is that why your GPA sucks???? For sure I know many students who are alone here, drive cabs and still manage to pull enough GPA to go to Pharmacy or Med school. How's working at a grocery store full time while doing pre-med. I still did it, I got into CCOM. Hope you don't use that as a reason to explain your low GPA.

my GPA is going to be around 3.3 by the time i will be applying(maybe a little bit higher maybe lower)...the whole time i was in college i had to work full time, plus i wasn't a citizen so not always was able to receive fin aid or schollarships. I went through a nasty divorce (almost got restraining order due to death threats) during my sophmore year....So yeah maybe after all my whole situation is a bad explanation. I am sure anybody in my shoes working 3 jobs and going full time to college would manage to get a 4.0 GPA...🙄

if i could do it over i would have done community college at night for the first two years and then transfer.

Another thing is that if your professor grades your presence in class (so called participation which is nothing but attendance= miss 3 classes you get one letter grade lower) then at the end (despite the fact that you get A's on your test and turned in all assignemnts) you get a lower score because you had to choose between going to class or paying your rent and having something in your stomach...it's kinda hard NOT to have a lower then usual GPA.
I do not think that my GPA reflects my potencial, and i hope that med schools will be able to see a valuable applicant in me and grant me acceptance.

I was a worker in school also, I just excelled in the classes that med schools wanted and I studied hard for the MCAT. YES YOU CAN USE WORKING THREE JOBS AS AN EXCUSE FOR NOT HAVING A 4.0 GPA. Adcoms understand our desire to take in food and have a roof over your head. Dont listen to the pansy nuts whose mommy and daddy paid for everything and worked at Toys-R-Us for gas money. I have four interviews and I used working 35-60 hours per week as an "excuse" for my low GPA (Overall was a 3.39 and my Sci GPA was a 3.6, MCAT was 13,12,7). Just be yourself.

I think I already made it clear that I am an immigrant like dr. kicia and if you are referring me as a pansy nuts with rich mommy and daddy u r seriously mistaken my friend.

r u having a bad day at work and treat this forum as a venting resource or something?😱
No need to be so arrogant on a forum where ppl try to help each other.
We both know that 3.3 GPA for DO schools with a stellar MCAT score and good EC is fine (maybe on a little low end but FINE) and that most of all it's not EVERYTHING (there are other factors to concider)... and stop comparing your situation to mine😡
you don't know me and have no clue what i have been through.
I will let the ADCOMs judge my situation and my "excuses" next cycle.

A tad bit off-topic...

I was wondering if it made much of a difference to shadow a MD rather then a DO (if I were applying to DO school)?

it depends on a school...some require specificaly a DO lor while other schools "recomend it"(but we all know what "recomend" means in this case:laugh: )

For those of you who have no DO rec, do not worry, because many schools will look past that. Find out where you want to apply and see what schools require DO recs. For example, I had six secondaries with only an MD rec, got all my interviews, and got three acceptances without having a DO rec. During my interviews I was never asked why did you shadow an MD over a DO, or any crap like that.

I got accepted to KCUMB, PCOM-GA, and KCOM.
Places that absolutely require the rec that I know of are NSU, LECOM, LECOM-Bradenton, West VIrginia COM.
