Hi,
I'm a 4th year med student applying for EM this fall. I am still debating whether or not to take step2 in time for applications or to put it off. I got a 224 on step1, I have 4 honors, 4 HP in third year, just to help give you an idea of my stats. I guess what I'm most concerned about is will it hurt me if I don't take the test prior to applying?
thanks

Have you done any EM rotations yet? Those grades and corresponding LORs are the most important factors. Also, there is that study that was conducted a while back about the most impt factors in applying to EM and Step 2 was ranked higher than Step 1. Considering the fact that your Step 1 score is solid, it is not off the walls (i.e. 240+) and thus it may be to your benefit to take Step 2 b/t now and October. However, you must do better on Step 2, as a lower score will raise eyebrows. So if were you, would bust my arse and study for Step 2 before. The caveat is probably your EM grades or lack thereof. If you have honored your EM rotations, then your step score may not be much of a factor at all.

Anyone else with more and/or better advice, please chime in...

Your score could go either way. The general consensus is to take STEP II late if you did really well on STEP I and to take it early if you didn't do so hot. Your score is pretty much dead average for matched EM applicants so it's really up to you. Do you think you can improve your score? If so, go ahead and take it earlier than later.

Realize there is a shift in CORD to start wanting step 2 scores prior to ranking applicants and some places before offering interviews.
