What is your opinion on whey protein pre/post-workout? What about the sugar substitutes in many of them? problem or no problem?

Not a great substitute for real food, but helpful to hit your macros while watching calories. You can only eat so many chicken breasts in a day

I personally haven't had any problems with the fillers/sugar subs, but I can't speak for everyone or every product out there. I've only used ON and EAS brands, and was able to do a ketosis/atkins style diet while using them, so carb content must be sufficiently low.

I guess it's also good for patients with poor appetite; I've heard nutritionists adding it in to jello, yogurt, milk to make that little bit of food that they eat count for more.

As for pre vs. post, I don't think there is any good information to say one way or the other. I do post-workout, but only because I don't like to have my stomach full and sloshing around while I'm working out, and since I'm usually heading to the gym from work, so I don't have a chance to make my shake beforehand.

i wouldnt take it preworkout i would stick with a meal about an hour an half before your workout and drink the protein after.

whey isolate is going to be the best choice out of the proteins, make sure you read the label and whey isolate is 1st. there is one called plantinum whey that is good as well as a brand called isopure. FYI.. you will pay for these as they are more expensive.

i personally just take the vitamin shoppe brand blend for $24, and has worked fine for me.

Oops thought I came to SDN but it looks like I'm at bodybuilding.com.

Jk... I'm a user there as well. I took an exercise physiology course with one of the best professors of my life, and here are some of the good points I took from him during that course.

-whey protein is good especially right after a workout, considering it is fast-absorbing.
-it can also be used as an appetite suppressant, as one shake alone absolutely kills your appetite for a good couple of hours
-whey is superior to both casein and soy proteins. The order is whey>casein>soy

I would recommend Optimum Nutrition 100% whey

Ive always used ISOpure whey protein and have gotten the best results while taking it. Its pure whey protein isolate. No carbs or fat.
