Hi friends,

First time posting on SDN. I noticed the other day that Temple University is a school that requires all of your listed/assigned letters to be sent in before they send out a secondary. Are there other MD schools that do this? Or any DO schools that y'all have encountered?

Thanks!

The best place for information on each school is its website, in addition to MSAR. Where did you see this regarding Temple? To my knowledge, it isn't true.

Hi, good question. I only found out because I reached out individually about something related.
You should definitely change your user name to something that preserves your anonymity!

As for that e-mail, I'd go back and question it with LKSOM. It contradicts what they say on their website, as well as what appears on MSAR. I honestly think the staffer who wrote it confused being marked complete with being sent a secondary.

Most schools send a secondary shortly after receiving a verified primary, with no screening at all. LKSOM states that they fall into this category. Those schools that do screen tend to do it based on GPA and MCAT. Very few schools actually conduct a manual review, which might include reading LORs, before sending secondaries.

I'm just an applicant like you, but even though I have now seen the e-mail, I honestly still don't believe it. A LOT of people are unable to get all of their LORs in until later, and I have never heard anyone complaining about that holding up secondaries. It sometimes doesn't even hold up IIs!

At the risk of contradicting KnightDoc, Washington State U does not send out secondaries until AFTER all letters are received. I suspect they aren't the only ones.
You're not contradicting me at all, unless you are saying Temple requires it. Washington State definitely does, and, in all fairness, I DID say "very few schools actually conduct a manual review, which might include reading LORs, before sending secondaries." I didn't say it never happens.

Washington State is clearly one of the "good guys" that not only has a very modest secondary fee, but they also don't look to get rich off it, by doing a meaningful screen rather than just indiscriminately sending it to everyone.

Thanks for all the replies y'all. I will update my username if I remember once I'm allowed to. I will f/u with the admissions.

I think you should follow up with a moderator ASAP on the name change. Hopefully a kind moderator like @gyngyn will be able to help, or at least point you in the right direction. 🙂

This is a fantastic idea and thank you both for volunteering to go thru the MSAR and school websites to begin the list. Congradulations on your new appointment here on SDN. We are looking forward to your hard work in this area and we now counting on you.
Haha, I will accept this appointment and get started.
