Hi guys,

I am moving from Toronto to Memphis for SCO this August and wondering what cell phone plans you guys use, in Memphis or anywhere else. I won't be having a landline and would solely rely on my cellphone, and I want to able to call my parents regularly.

AT&T shocked me with $75 plan for smartphones, that's way too much for "living like a student now and live like a doctor later" plan. I checked out Cricket and Cellular South they offer almost unlimited minutes/texts for $30. I wonder if there's any catch and if they have crappy signals...

Someone also suggested me getting a phone with a lot of Data and use Skype.

Bottom line is, to save as much as I could.
Any suggestions? Thanks!🙂

why not use gmail video chat etc? If you really wanna be cheap about it :-/
Or, if you have family in the states or someone that you're really close with has service with att or verizon etc, you could just join their plan. I'm on my moms plan and it's super cheap that way.

I have Verizon and it works with no problems at all.. I'm about to switch to Virgin Mobile though and get this Motorola Triumph. VM's plans start at $25 bucks for 300talk & unlimited texts/internet/etc. You can get 1200 mins for 40, and unlimited for 60 i think.

I used to have cellular south and I thought it was great. I never had any issues with signal and the plans are very affordable. Their smart phones are pretty decent too.

I would never use skype as a means of communication! T-Mobile is reasonable with their no contract prices. You have to either use an existing phone that is compatible with T-Mobile, or you will have to buy one without the new contract perks. Since I already had a phone, this was the best option for me. I love it, and it's cheap!

What plan would you recommend for an international student?....

Have you looked into keeping your same phone/plan and just adding international calling to it? Most companies have excellent rates for Canada/US/Mexico because it's not really "international".
