I'm wondering which DO schools are known for research especially those located in the Northeast: PCOM, LECOM, NYCOM, UNECOM, UMDNJ, WVCOM,etc.

I'd appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction to find a school that is gearing up to have more research because of money coming from grants or new facilities or currently is doing a lot of research now. Don't mind if it is lab or clinical research. Doesn't have to be osteopathic research also. Thanks!

The only DO school I know of that has any sort of notority with research is TCOM.

UMDNJ as a university is very big into research, and SOM is a leader in research funding and activity among all osteopathic medical schools.

PCOM does a fair bit of research. Linked on our homepage is a list of faculty and their research projects. Right now there are a few DOD projects going on at PCOM as well as some NIH money floating around.

MSUCOM
UMDNJ

These are the top two DO schools performing real research.
THey are both public and linked to a big public university.

OUCOM and TCOM and others may also perform research.. but nothing compared to these schools.

Actually, if you look at the research dollars and number of NIH grants, TCOM leads the pack with over 25 million this year alone. It is also the home of the osteopathic research center.

KCUMB has just built a brand new 45,000sq foot research facility that is biolevel 2 ready. This facility is up and running and has clinical research as well as basic science research projects on its agenda. This facility is one of its kind in the kansas city area.

stupid question here -- does it matter how well your school is known for research provided that you actually do research. maybe i'm being naive, but it seems like all the schools i'm looking at state the students have lots of opportunity to involved in research if they so desire. is it really a bigger pain than these schools are letting on?

If the school is known for research, they tend to have more research money. Also they will tend to have well know faculty so it may help when it comes to publication.

I think if you enjoy the research while you do it, it won't really matter too much where you do it. If you do research, you should try to get publications out since they will help you for your residency.

another thing about research, if you're interested, you might consider goin to a school that offers it as a second degree.....for example, either KCOM or AZCOM offers DO/MS and DO/PhD respectively.

Most schools will do research but you have to make sure that students are allowed to participate in those research. Some of the schools i interviewed at had a research department and all but students dont really get a chance to actually work in the lab with the professor(s), and if they do, it's only for a short amount of time because they rather have you focusin on your DO degree, which of couse makes senese.

So again, if you're interested in research, think about doin a duel degree.

thanks for all of the feedback everyone.

If you're looking for top in research funding, go for the med schools affiliated with large universities. MSU, UMDNJ, TCOM, OSU...they have full fledged biochem/physio/anatomy/etc departments with grants and funding allocated directly to those departments. The funding for MSU's biochem department probably exceeds that of many independent colleges.
With respect to MSUCOM in particular, our proximity and cooperation with CHM helps a great deal. Furthermore, COM is seriously increasing funding and research grants in anticipation of CHM's relocation to Grand Rapids...whenever they get it together (no rush though, I enjoy having the CHiMs around). As such, our funding is pretty solid and the research output is pretty cool.
At least this is what I've heard. Can anyone back up my statements with evidence?
