Hey everyone,

Had a quick question: Which DO schools tend to value research and publications?

I found out on Sunday that I am going to be acknowledged in an NIH grant for one of my experiments 😍Needless to say I am super thrilled. Will this help boost an application?

(also side note, can I bring this up after I graduate from medical school and when looking to match in a residency? Will it help in finding a competitive residency?)

I know that most DO schools dont really care about research and that it is more like a cherry on top thing, but which DO schools would like to see more research in an application?

i think i might have seen a secondary Question for Western asking about any research you may have done. not sure really.

all of them
+1. All school value research, but research will NOT get you in. GPA/MCAT are by far the most important factors for all DO school. Research will not make up for a poor GPA or MCAT.

I know KCUMB does value research to a higher degree than most DO schools.

Definitely not true. DO schools are known for considering the whole applicant.

While they do consider the whole applicant most of that consideration comes during the interview; prior to that you really need to get a decent GPA and MCAT to get into consideration. Thus if you have the time to do research or retake a poor MCAT... retake the poor MCAT.

GPA/MCAT get you into the pool of applicants from which they consider the whole applicant.

No, I don't see that being true. Look at our underdog threads. Successful ones usually have very good EC activities and job histories. Hollistic approach is from day 1. You just need to meet the cutoffs.

+1. If your a borderline 21-23 MCAT 3.0-3.3 they are gonna take a good look at your ECs and letters of rec in order to get an interview but rest a sure if you got a 3.6+ and a 27+ you will get a lot of interviews even if you got weak ECs

GPA/MCAT are certainly used to screen out applicants, but if it was the most important factor, the average stats wouldn't be as much lower than MD as they are now. I'm not saying GPA/MCAT aren't important, but much less emphasis is put on those by DO schools compared to MD schools.

I don't buy that, especially considering that 3.6/26 is average.
