I am a reapplicant to US med schools. As a backup plan, I am planning to apply to carribean med schools. However, I would like the option of applying to Canadian & European schools and I was wondering if anyone could tell me any Canadian/European med schools which accept US applicants. How difficult is it to get into Canadian med schools as a US citizen? I've heard of The Atlantic Bridge Program in Ireland but is there anything else in other countries? I am planning to come back to US for residency so I am looking for US accredited foreign schools.

Good luck with Canadian schools. They are even more oversubscribed than U.S. schools. Some Canadian schools maintain a handful of positions for foreign applicants (mostly to collect full tuition.) Check the AAMC listings for Canadian schools to see which ones.

I'm not sure what you mean by a U.S. accredited foreign school. If by this, you mean the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA), there are a number of countries with schools that participate in the Stafford loan program. Click on the link above to investigate.

  • Ireland; this forum is probably the definite place for information.
  • UK; Expensive & very difficult to gain admission as a North American. Do a search on this forum for advice re: UK schools & check out www.medschoolguide.co.uk
  • Central/Eastern European English language programs; Most are six year programs and are not designed for North Americans. Some four year programs exist in Poland and Bulgaria. For further information do a search here and see the European forum at www.valuemd.com
  • Other European countries require fluency in their native language.
