Hi everyone,

I am a Canadian and have been accpeted at MSUCOM with Dec 1st being the deadline to respond to the offer of admission. I have got a couple of other interview invites too (KCUMB, NOVA, Marian and AZCOM). I can only afford going to two more in the month of November since I am broke at the moment. I am not finding a date for AZCOM in Novemeber, but for others I can interview in Novemeber. Interviewing and getting to know whether I am accepted or not is important since I need to respond to my offer from MSUCOM. Which two of the three (KCUMB, NOVA and Marian) should I go to? I would like to go to a school that has a strong curriculum that will prepare me well for board exams and has greater chances of getting me a residency in a surgery specialty. Above all, I want to go to a school that is Canadian friendly. I know a lot of you will say MSUCOM, but I can't find benefits of their Canadian initiative and their fees is quite high too.

Any responses/suggesstions will be appreciated!

all of those schools will have a strong curriculum and help you prepare for boards, you have to research each school and try to find small things you don't like about them to help you decide. location, cost, type of curriculum, etc.

I don't know if it's Canadian friendly, but I would recommend KCUMB as one of the schools. I haven't been, but I've heard a lot of people compare the school to DMU and saying that they were highly impressed with the program and how happy the students were with the school.

KCUMB's tuition: $42,039 vs. MSUCOM: $78,891 (OOS)

I remember reading somewhere that MSUCOM usually offers some sort of scholarship to canadian applicants that lowers their OOS tuition to rival that of the IS tuition. Don't quote me on that, though.

As for what other schools to interview at, I would recommend Nova and KCUMB. Maarian is a new school and if given the option, I personally would not want to be the guinea pig class. I don't have a good reason to choose those two schools over AZCOM. I guess it's more of a personal preference

KCUMB and Nova imo. Better to go to an older/more established school if you can.

Yes it does. But the scholarship is only $20,000 and reduces the tuition to 60k. All other schools that I have looked at so far, their tuition is 40-45k.

go with the 40k schools then. an extra 80k in the end...thats a huge negative when you get just as good of an education at other schools

I'd choose KCUMB over all of them but I only have interviewed there and at NOVA and I wasn't a huge fan of NOVA. I LOVED everything about KCUMB except the cold winters (but being from Canadia, it shouldn't be a problem for you eh?)

Go to kcumb and nova interviews.

no offense but having people tell you what interviews you should go to is like having people tell you what kind of car you should drive, lol. personal preference brah. that's all it is. some of these people will tell you school x is so much better than school y. most of these people are full of ****, just go with what you like.

I think the OP is just asking for opinions. There's nothing wrong with that.

Also, not all schools are created equal, regardless of what some may believe

Right and none of us really know what the school is like until we see it. I'm in a similar situation as the OP and will not be attending Marian and LMU-DCOM interviews because of time/money and being accepted to an older, more established school already. So I'd go with KCUMB and NSU if I was the OP

DO schools are ranked by what SDN thinks and that scares the **** out of me, lol. all DO schools may not necessarily be equal but you can do well at any DO school if you work hard enough. so you want to choose the school that will make the experience the most enjoyable/tolerable because that will def make it easier to suceed. And I don't think some DO schools are leagues above others, maybe slightly better but an insignificant amount, imo. of course many will disagree with me, but that's their opinion. I try to rarely listen to SDN advice though because I think about who the source could be...the only advice that has been useful so far was buying tbr for the mcat.

You're right in saying that it mainly has to do with individual effort. However, newer schools have more bumps to even out than established schools.

I believe it is common knowledge to choose a school that is established and has a pretty good track record over a school that has no track record and is most likely going to be dealing with obstacles that many established schools have already dealt with.

That's all I'm getting at.

Note: I am a biased fanboy of a particular college you mentioned.

It depends what you consider beneficial for landing a surgery residency. Obviously, you can land surgery residencies at all the medical schools that you discussed; however, I think some schools stand out more than others.

I, too, have an interest in surgery (I hope I get over it by 4th year). When choosing a medical school to attend, I heavily weighed the amount of OPTIs and sponsored residencies a particular school had. Also, because audition rotations are important for landing a surgical or sub-surgical residency, I chose a medical school located around multiple hospitals with such residencies. Research is also beneficial to your CV when it comes time to apply for residencies. I chose a school where research is very available.

The individual is responsible for landing a residency through board scores, audition rotations, grades, etc...but I think certain medical schools are more helpful than others in the aspects I discussed above.

Curious, which school?

It's hard to say since you don't know what's going
to resonate with you... I liked kcumb but loved cusom
so older doesn't mean everything. With that said
you mentioned you want to go to an interview where you have
a good chance of being admitted. Historically
That is true of kcumb too
