I went to speak with a compound pharmacist this past weekend to see if I could score a pharm tech job. Currently I work at the the UT Health Science Center in a physiology lab helping to identify genes associated with ALS. I am also an on call lab tech for another lab in San Antonio. The pharmacist advised me that my resume was impressive but that I should keep my current job researching ALS as opposed to looking to be hired as a pharm tech. He advised that my current job would be more impressive to a pharmacy school board than a pharm tech position. Do you think this is true? Or do you think he was just saying "no thanks" in a nice way?

I can't really answer your question, but as someone who works in research myself, I can tell you that I definitely plan to keep my job in research until pharmacy school. It pays a heck of a lot better than being a pharm tech. I guess if we want pharmacy experience we should go the volunteering or shadowing route.

Many apps that I've seen have a section specifically for pharmacy experience. You don't have to become a tech, but you don't want to leave that section blank.

anyone can be a tech, not everyone has the talent/fortitude to do research. Shadow a pharmacist, keep the research. It will make you a more interesting candidate over the masses of pharm clerks and techs applying.
