does anyone know which is a better school? Western or UOP?
if you think either one is better than the other for any reason, please let me know! thanks

UOP being 3 years is good but it probably means extra hard work. Western is on a block system which means more concentrated work. Guess you just have to out wiegh what you think is important

I have heard that UOP is more competitive.....But personally I think Western allows for more professor/student interaction. The class size at Western is smaller, and its in a more fun area! Stockton isnt toooo happenin'....But its all about you, you will graduate in UOP in 3 yrs, verses Western a four year program. I think the education at both places will be just fine.

Though you should remember in order to sit on the board you need to have certain number of clinical hours. Most people get those during the summer. With UOP you don't really have any time where you're free and can devote a lot of time on working. It might be difficult to satisfy your hour requirements. Of course doable, but requires a LOT of work. BUT, cutting down your expensive by 1/4 is always nice.

lilia~ you make a really good point. in terms of hours since Touro has 2 years rotations, would that be better?

I interviewed at Touro and asked them about the clinical hours. I was told that if you go there, you will have all your hours completed- no need to find other hours yourself.

Last time I checked you needed 1000 hours to qualify as a board candidate. Thats not hard to do over 3 years. I'm in N Ca & UOP has a great relationship with community pharmacists all over the bay area, so finding intern placement is not an issue. Its more difficult for hospital positions because it is extremely costly in time & money to train an individual when they are only there for 4 hrs @ a time. It becomes more a "shadowing" situation which is not beneficial for the intern or preceptor, IMO.

I think UOP is better since Western is not accreditted.

are you naive or out of your mind? WESTERN UNIV is accredited 😛

On these forums, someone said that UOP has a VERY HIGH dropout rate.

But personally, even if it was true, I would take my chances and go to be done in 3 years!

/QUOTE]

i heard from a pharmacist that they have the lowest passing rate on the board... or HAD... maybe it was in the beginning?

that comment by yupyup, just ignore it. it doesn't warrant an argument.

I'll be attending UNC in the fall. Perhaps I was a bit hasty in my previous post. They are real schools, accredited and whatnot. I guess it just depends if you want to spend your money and 4 years of your life to go to a second tier school or a top tier school. That's not an insult, just one way to look at it. There will always be those who want to push the field forward and those who want the degree and a job at CVS. Neither is better, we need both, just different. If you're looking for a residency and the person you are going against graduated from UCSF, then you are disadvantaged. Yes, rankings are kind of lame and all, but schools have good reps because they consistently train the best students. Anyway, enjoy your time at western or uop...

i would pick uop for its 3-yr program.

I would think UOP.

But I think I may be a bit biased because I never heard of Western until it was time to apply to schools.

And other than that, UOP has the three year program.

For those attending UOP or applied to UOP, why did you chose to apply UOP? What are the Pros? the Cons?
