I have to choose between studying for the DAT for the next 4 weeks, and taking biochem in the fall, and submit my application with biochem grade pending

OR

Take Biochem now, and then study and take the DAT in the fall.

Which option do you think is best?

Ideally I'd do both right now, but realistically, I don't have enough time as I work Full-time and part time jobs (couple evenings and one weekend day a month).

Thanks!

100% take the DAT this summer if you plan on applying this cycle.

You don't have to complete your pre-reqs before you apply. You only have to complete them before you matriculate.

Hey Glimmer,

I was just wondering is there anywhere that says this in writing? I have heard conflicting views on the completion of pre-reqs before applying. I really appreciate your work here on SDN. Thanks alot!

I think there is a statement to this effect on just about every single school's website. 🙂 Here is a random one I just found when I googled it:

http://www.bu.edu/dental/admissions/dmd/req/
"Boston University requires that all prerequisites be completed prior to matriculation. At the time of submission of the application, it is understood that some prerequisites are pending completion. In the AASDAS application, list your planned courses."

That's great!! Thanks so much! For some reason, I haven't been able to find those words on the dental school websites I've perused. Thank you Glimmer!

No problem! Some schools word it differently (and potentially in a confusing manner), but I can assure you that they just want them done before you matriculate. 🙂

For example, confusing wording (on a related but slightly different topic):
http://hsdm.harvard.edu/academics/dmd/admissions_requirements
"All applicants are required to have at least a bachelor’s degree in order to apply for the DMD program."
...but then they go on in their next sentence to say...
"Applications will be considered for students completing their final year of an undergraduate degree."

So you don't ACTUALLY have to have a bachelor's to apply, which is what they say in the first sentence... you just have to be working towards getting one! 😀

Thats great! Thamks so much Glimmer for your help!

what if you didn't put it on planned course and still have one more class to finish but didn't put it since it wasn't registered for summer?

It'll be fine. If a school has a question about a course, they'll just ask.
