The answer given is (B). I thought B/C would likely be in the aqueous layer. No pH was given so it's a bit ambiguous.

(A) is immediately ruled out because it cannot H-bond with EtOH like the others. (C) and (D) can be ruled out because they are extremely nonpolar. Think about it. Stearate is a fatty acid and (D) resembles a fatty acid with a long acyl tail. Would you expect fatty acids to be in the aqueous layer?
