which MPH program takes MCAT?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I doubt any do. I think I remember remember that my program (U of MN) has a deadline of March 1, allowing you enough time to take the GRE.

U of Michigan does, but the program directors dont encourage it tho, they dont want to be seen as a steppin stone for med schl

Good advice!

If you're going to apply to MPH programs, I would recommend thinking long and hard about how your phrase your letter of intent/personal statement. I don't think there is anything wrong with saying that for you to accomplish your career goals will require an MPH followed by an MD (or another advanced degree), but DO NOT make it seem like the MPH is *only* to get you into an MD program.

But don't fear - many people do an MPH before medical school, and many people do an MPH during or after medical school. It can be a great time for your education. It surely has been for me.

Hey! Just another thing to add in here - the gre is very flexible to take - just call up the center and take it anytime. When I called they seriously said, when do you want to come in - tomorrow? Also, it's not that bad of a test - basically the SAT over again with an added logic puzzles section- it's not like the mcat where you have to study for hours on end. Good luck!

yeah, just take the GRE. mph isn't engineering school or anything, and programs aren't looking for a 2200+ score or anything. After taking one or two practice tests, you'll be ready to take it any day, its not bad at all. and like abw said, you can take it pretty much anytime you wont. I signed up for it 3 days before i took it

MPH programs take MCAT scores in place of GRE for people who have already been admitted to medical school or have just finished med school and want to spend a year or two studying for the MPH. I think you should take the GRE...it is cake compared to the MCAT and I think it would be to your advantage to score at least a 650 on each section to compete at the top schools of pblic health.

Not true, I know that a friend just started at Hopkins, applied using MCAT scores, str8 from undergrad. Plus I knw for a fact that The University of Michigan takes MCAT scores, but dont want to be seen as a stepping stone for medical schl. You're right, the GRE is a piece of cake, after having struggled with the MCAt, i felt so comfortable taking it, only like a week studying, not even that intensely.

calbears84, really think about it, come up with another personal statement, I had to do one for the epidemiology masters program I'm in now. I replaced the word medical with health, and kinda changed my story up a bit. I'm in my 2nd and hopefully last yr of it, and its been a gr8 plan B, and I can actually see myself using it along with my medical degree in the future.

Happy New Year's all...

Hopkins MPH admissions accepts MCAT scores, but they will not accept applicants that are straight out of undergrad. The MPH program there is heavily geared towards MDs. If you have significant work experience you can try applying there.

Yale's MPH admissions accepts MCAT scores in lieu of GREs and they also accept applicants that are straight out of undergrad (I can speak from experience, since I applied and got into Yale's program). U. Mich's MPH program also accepts undergrads (I think they also let you substitute MCAT scores as well---just double check). U. Mich is generous with scholarships; my friend applied to their MPH program and got a full ride. Boston U. also has 1 year accelerated MPH programs and I believe MCAT scores are accepted. I heard many of the MPH students there are recently graduated students (and hence, the program has quite a different feel than the ones that are tailored for MDs).

If you don't have work experience, another option would be the MS programs at the public health schools.

Hope this helps.

But I believe U Mich does NOT allow their MPH students to hold graduate (research, teaching, or other) assistantships. I know a few people at Minnesota who decided to come here rather than Michigan because of this. Not sure if they got scholarships to Michigan or not.

Columbia definitely accepts MCAT scores in lieu of GRE scores. I would definitely ask the admissions department if there is a problem with submitting MCAT scores instead of GRE scores. I don't understand why they would have a problem with it though because a good score on the MCAT definitely trumps a good score on the GRE, and many people take the MCAT without the intention of using an MPH as a stepping stone to get into med school. Perhaps the GRE is a good idea if you scored less than 30M (at least a 10 in verbal). Otherwise, I say don't waste your money and the half day on the glorified SAT.

Tulane accepts the MCAT also. At least they did when I went in '97.

Do you guys think that a 27p (10V, 9B, 8P) is good enough to get into an MPh program, or should I take the GRE. I am considering Columbia, BU, etc. Thanks.

Not true, I know several students at the Umich MPH programs who had teaching assistanships in several depts such as chemistry and biology.

Oh. I wonder what my friends were complaining about then. Perhaps they aren't allowed to hold research assistantships?

I would call the admissions office just to be sure, but I would say that it should be good enough to get in. I think they care more about your verbal score and just look to see that you can hold your own with the sciences (since you don't really need a thorough knowledge of biologal or physical sciences for the MPH program). Columbia is a more competitive program, but I am sure that you will get into BU with those stats (I have a friend who got in with a 400 verbal on the GRE--apparently the admissions office told him that they accept just about anyone Hope that helps.
