Which MPH programs are 1 year?

As the title states, which (if there are any) MPH programs only take one year? I'm hoping to go to medical school after wards, so a two year programs would not exactly suit me well.

Hi,

Most one year programs require significant public health or medical experience prior to admission. You might consider doing medical school first, and then doing your MPH. This is probably the best route, since you'll then have a medical context upon which to orient your MPH training. One can also do a one-year MPH between the 3rd and 4th years of medical school. We have around 40 medical students from various schools in the Hopkins MPH class this year. You can find out from the SDN discussion archives lots of information about which schools offer 1 year programs, deadlines, etc.

Thanks for the reply! Well, I was planning to let the MPH help me get into medical school and prefer to do it before I start my studies. I am definitely interested in Hopkins though...can you comment on how grades are based? Are they nice about giving students A's and such, or are they more harsh due to how prestigious the program is (I don't want to enter a program and not be able to churn out successful grades as you might imagine)?

We're about to enter finals for the summer term, so I haven't seen yet how the grades will distribute. The curriculum is fast-paced, with five 8-week terms instead of the usual semester system. Efficient studying and time management is very important, but with shorter terms, one has the opportunity for exposure to many areas. It works extremely well.

Hopkins, Harvard, UNC-Chapel Hill, Columbia (only the General Public Health track is possible to do in 1 year), Yale, Dartmouth. There may be others. All of these, except Dartmouth, require post undergrad health experience, or an advanced degree. The Dartmouth web site says that premeds are eligible. If you are doing an MPH to boost your GPA to gain admission to medical school, then enrolling in a good post-bac program and taking more undergraduate courses may be your better option, since undergraduate grading will likely be more stringent. An MPH will probably mean more to you if you do it after or during medical school.

so I know Dartmouth, UC Davis and Thomas Jefferson University all have one year straight out of undergrad, no need for a professional degree programs.

I applied straight out of undergrad and had only research experience in Pathology and Behavioral Biology but I volunteered in a hospital and I got into both Dartmouth and UC Davis. Trick is for Dartmouth to apply early.

That being said, when you compare the one year programs to the two year programs there is a noticeable difference in the whole experience and learning. In one year it's hard to get any kind of practical experience (which I didn't think was important when I applied), but now looking back at my acceptances and experiences at the schools, I felt a two year track was that way to go. Also keep in mind most of these one year programs do require a thesis and it is hard to finish one in one year. And remember that most people who do these one year programs are mid career changes or they do have professional degrees and they're really doing it just for the degree. At Dartmouth and UC Davis it is hard to specialize because at a two year MPH program when I graduate I'll have my MPH in Epidemiology, but if I went to a one year program I'd just have my MPH. Just some things to keep in mind.
