The correct answer is CO2, but why?

I'd approach with elimination process.

NH3, CaCO3, CH3OH are mixed in water, they all produce acid & base substance. But CO2 will form carbonic acid in water.
In our blood, CO2 is carried out by forming bicarbonate ion.

I think this is it. 🙄

nothing like a little biochem to get me going in the afternoon (i'm a biochem graduate student 😀)

CO2 + H20 --> H2CO3 --> H+ + HCO3-

pH = -log[H+] therfore if you add more CO2, you will make more H+ and as the [H+] goes up the pH goes down - viola! acidic solution.


NH3 + H20 --> NH4+ + OH- (basic solution)

CaCH3 is a trick answer, they prob wanted you to think it was CaCO3. but even it was CaCO3, the CO3- anion is a conjugate base and would infact raise the pH. this is also a mechanism that our body (the kidneys) uses to buffer out excess acid in the blood

CH3OH does not release a free H+ easily, and thus cannot attribute to the production of an acidic solution. this compound would not even dissociate in an aqueous solution, but if it were, it would produce and abundance of OH- anions raising the pH making it more basic.
