I began to watch embryology/anatomy video and so far I'm finding it surprisingly good. Which other ones are good to watch?

I dont want to watch all of the Kaplan videos since I want to do my own studying with other books. But if some of the subject videos by kaplan are really strong and worth investing time into, I'd really like to know.

Pharm and biochem but really which ever subject you are weak in, it will payoff to watch the videos of that subject if you have the time.

pharmacology is a must...that guy with the french accent is so money with his integrations and teaching....for pharm i'm watching his vids 3 times over the next month

biochem is good as well although i only used the book

anatomy and embryo, especially neuroanatomy is also money...the vids help build understanding more than anything

i used physio back when i took the shelf but i don't like them anymore, the guy moves too slow and he's not high yield

pharm is w/o a doubt tho a must watch

i have 2 weeks before end of my med school/9 week board studying time........so i was thinking of listening to anatomy/embryo, biochem, and neuroanatomy during these last 2 weeks......i dont wanna take any notes while watch...i just want to watch to do a quick refresh of my memory and get an overall picture before i start my summer studying (using FA and the top books recommended by FA).

so my question is....do u think thats a good idea to watch anatomy, biochem, neuro?

do you recommend watching any other vids in place of the 3 i mentioned (ie. watching pharm instead of neuro, etc?). i reason i didnt wanna do pharm now was because its 33hrs long.....so i thought i might do it in the summer when im really studying

what do you think? any suggestions?

BQ: are anatomy/embryo, biochem, neuro an easy watch.......(ie. watching constantly w/o taking notes.....just for the overall pic)? if not, which is an easy watch?

About how long is it taking everyone to go through the videos while making margin notes? It seems like its taking me forever to get through each subject in coordination with the videos. Anyone else in the same boat?🙁

You could probably finish all the anatomy/embryology/neuroanatomy videos in 2-3 days. I didn't really like the anatomy and embryology videos. Neuroanatomy was good.
I didn't think the Micro and Immuno videos were very useful.
Pharm videos were great.
Behavioral Science videos were awesome!
I didn't do the biochem videos.

so from the consensus of this thread, i gather the following:

Pharm- excellent
Behavioral Science- excellent
Biochemistry- good
Neuro- good
Anatomy/Embryo- ok
Physiology- not great
Immunology- not great
Micro- not great
Pathology- ????
Genetics-????
Histo-????

anyone1 else wanna fill in the rest or argue about the previous or even give your experiences/opinions about videos?

My recommendations:
Watching the videos without notes is perfectly fine if you want to get an overview (I watched the videos at increased speed a while ago and this is the method I used). Follow along with Kaplan MedEssentials instead of the lecture notes if you really need something to look at. They use a lot of the same tables and diagrams.

ok < good < great < excellent

  • Anatomy/Embryology (11h): good
  • *Behavioral Science(20h): excellent
  • *Biochemistry (18h): great
  • Genetics (5.5h): good
  • Histology (2.5h): great
  • Immunology (7h): good
  • Microbiology (11h): ok
  • *Neurology (10h): great
  • Pathology (25h): good; *slide review worth watching (1.5h)
  • Pharmacology (30h): great
  • *Physiology - old videos (29h): excellent
  • Physiology - new videos (37h): ok; couldn't watch b/c the guy was hand writing notes on a tablet & he said 'ladies and gentlemen' too much

thanks a lot for ur suggestions......im assuming when you say "old" videos, you mean the 2006/7 DVD sets? [i think that was the last dvd format lectures kaplan did [after that u could only access it online i think].

cuz i have the 2006/7 so i just wanna make sure we're on the same page.

Also, do you think just following the vids w/ First Aid is ok...or will get more out of those lecs by using Med Essentials?

Thanks for the feedback!!

The "old" physiology video is from ~ 2004. The lecturer is Dr. Robert Dunn.

All the other videos I mentioned are from ~ 2007.

I got the most out of the videos by listening carefully since I only used it for an overview. Often times it's easy to get absorbed in note taking and obsessing about the details that you miss the overall picture. I know this because I used to do it A LOT. Remember, do whatever works for you. Now is not the time to experiment with radically different study methods.

MedEssentials has a lot of the charts and graphs that you see in the videos, BUT that means you're adding on another book to your list. First Aid - I don't know if it's possible to follow the videos with this. Maybe someone else can comment.

This is my opinion based on web prep vids w/ lectures 2009-2010

Pharm- Like other people are saying its pretty good. Only downside would be the time consumption, and also hearing his annoying voice in my sleep
Behavioral Science- excellent - agreed! I actually enjoyed watching these. Time constraint would be the only reason not to imo.
Biochemistry- good - agreed. The notes are pretty good standalone (without lectures). I've added more from UWORLD than I have from the lectures here.
Neuro- good -yeah, like biochem, these notes are strong alone
Anatomy/Embryo- embryo is explained pretty well in the lectures. I never really got embryo so I actually kind of liked these.
Physiology- if you want to "master" renal, the lectures w/ notes for that section hit just about every point I have come across. Conrad fisher's lectures for the first few chapters>>last few chapters. Heart & lung sections are pretty good.
Immunology/Micro- I found these to be a bit of a waste of time. The book itself is pretty good on its own. Hours of hepatitis and HIV lectures is something I've already been through this year.
Pathology- Ahem.... SUCKS. The first lecturer reads the teleprompt which adds little/nothing to the notes. The second guy just reads the notes to you and says "very important" every few seconds. As for the notes, these are the only ones I really have been disappointed with. They just seem really sparse & random in terms of whats important. I've been using UWORLD big time to fill in the gaps here.

I totally agree with you on pathology!!!

Pardon my ignorance, but how do you watch the videos at 2x speed?

Many programs let you speed up videos. Windows Media Player, VLC, etc.

I prefer VLC, as it lets you speed it up without increasing the pitch, like WMP does.

In fact, I recommend VLC for pretty much anything.

vlc sometimes distorts the audio if you speed it up on windows, GOM player does a better job on windows

I don't think I've had that problem. I use VLC to watch class lectures, usually on 1.77-2.00 depending on the speaker. They're generally still able to be understood.
I never had a problem with distortion using vlc at 1.8x or sometimes 2.0x speed
Are you talking about the dark-skinned guy with beard and mustache? I love his jokes and stories, 😛
Yea his name is Dr. Wazir Kudrath. My attention span couldn't handle his style of teaching but he's obviously very knowledgeable about physiology.

The biochem teacher and the micro teacher got together! can you believe it? I have the qbank and in qutorial videos she's kim moscatello-seastone and i googled confirmation. Kaplan brought them love.

Hey are the number of hours per subject accurate? Do you have an index for the videos by any chance? Been looking for an index for 2007 videos forever, but haven't been able to find one.

And for the original question, I watched pathology and physiology videos so far. Just started to watch pharm. I would say the physiology was very good. Pathology w/ Dr. Barrone felt a bit exhausting, but I think I liked him better then goljan. I found goljan's audio lectures to be a bit hard to follow. I've only watched about 5 hours of pharm, and so far he seems to be making pharm a little less scary.

How are you all putting the videos on 2x? You're using the Kaplan webprep videos, right? It only gives me the choice to click on the link to the video, and then it opens in Adobe flash player... I don't know if I'm missing something here.

I think they're using 2007 Kaplan videos, and watching them using VLC player.

The hours are accurate by my own account.

I think I found what you were looking for here.

What?! He could have done way better.

What do you think is more worth doing, kaplan webprep [but not path since it sucks] + BRS path or only RR path? I can't do both since not enough time (6.5 weeks). Cause I want to do DIT as well.

Either option is in addition to the standard Uworld and FA of course.
