which one is the most important to match for an IMG: step 1, 2, or 3?

All of the above. Most importantly is not to fail any exam and do pass these exam at least with some decent scores like over 200.

For an IMG, all the scores matter. Steps 1 and 2 matter the heaviest. Step 3 matters for prematch availability.

A lot of programs use the step scores as a screen. Whether a program uses step 1 or CK as a screen, varies by program. But I would think to cut down the applicant pool from 3000 to even half (1500), they would use the Step 1 as a screen. That does not mean CK is not important - because that would help them to weed off the other IMGs and bring it down to 750.

Always aim for >240 to be safe; this does not mean if you get 226, you will not get interviews; it just means that being an IMG, there is a strong probability you would get lesser interviews as compared to another IMG who got a 240. The modifier here is the US clinical experience as well. I am not sure if this is entirely true for AMGs.

funny that you mentioned 226, because that's the EXACT score that i got on my step 1......

the problem is, that not only i'm an IMG, but i would be probably going for a couples match with my wife, and that makes the whole matching thing even harder...

what do you think?

This is not correct, you can prematch without step 3. Only difference the step 3 makes for an IMG is for visas. You need step 3 to get an H1b visa, otherwise you can only get a J-1 visa.

Dont worry - ensure that you ace step 2 - use the available resources. Ensure your SO aces step 2. Get the USCE - I cannot stress how important this is. AND GET ECFMG CERTIFIED BEFORE SEPT 1ST IF POSSIBLE. Be ready to search around the country if you want a strong program (this could mean even Iowa City and Omaha - both of which are strong programs). If you would rather be in one city, then be ready to settle for a not-the-best program.

Couples match is hard...matching for IMGs is still relatively hard (into a good program)...but I have seen IMGs couples matching...often with your scores, so if you play your cards right, it will work out.

You are right - but program directors are a lot more confident offering a prematch if they have the step 3 score in hand. But if someone really wants you there, they can always say "We are offering you a prematch. Get your step 3 done asap and we will sponsor your H1 (if their GME allows them to).

P.S. I hope your SO is not applying for Ophthal or ENT or Plastics or Derm or something...

thanks for the info.

pardon my ignorance, but what does it mean ECFMG certified, and why do i have to do it before September 1st?

by the way, i don't intend to move to the US until September 2012...

We do this regularly on SDN...for our own sadistic pleasures..so please dont be offended 😉

On a serious note, it does put things very clearly, and you would be much better off reading that than getting it from someone here.
