As far as I know, Havard is the best college in the US, but it's for business and law rather than medical career, right? So, would you please telling me which colleges in the US are best at medical?

Latest US News Rankings

But I would argue that these rankings don't really tell you what is "best." I mean there are so many things to consider when selecting a medical school than what the US News rankings say. One school's hospital may be better in one specialty than another's. One school's curriculum may not be the best type of curriculum for everyone. etc. etc. With that said...there isn't really a "best" medical school. It just depends on what you are looking for in your medical education and the school that best fits your personal criteria(not the US News' criteria) is the best school for you.

I think so. One is not good at everything. Knowing our interests and faculties is not enough, we gotta know how to choose the best-fitting school, too. But I have no clue which I should choose...

what??? So US News knows which is the best school for you? How can US News know which school is the best-fit for you?

Who said Harvard is the "best college" in the US?
Even USNews didn't say that.

Of course. Because Havard is considered the best college in the US, isn't it? Finding a good job not only depends on your degree but also relies upon your school's reputation.

To a small degree, perhaps. But that doesn't mean just because you go to Harvard you are guaranteed the best job in the world and will undoubtedly make millions.

Ok... I have a bad feeling about this thread...

Choosing a medical school is a complex amalgam of your interests, location, costs, curriculum, culture, programs, match rate, specialties, the hospitals, and finally...which one admits you.

Medicine unlike undergrad education, places much less emphasis on the ranking of your school with your eventual success. More importantly is your own performance. I believe this is because there are so few medical schools and they are closely regulate, that all 129 of them are excellent insitutions.

For undergrad education, there are many colleges of varying degree of quality and rigor, and for the lay person there is no way to keep abreast of their individual programs. Therefore, rankings are more important. You can get a quality education at many undergraduate colleges, but one of the laws of life is that perception is reality. By its vary nature, a name-brand school will have higher name recognition and therefore will open more doors to you than a less known school. Although this may not correlate with the quality of education that was received at either the name school or unname school, the perception that the school is better matters in the real world.

Gleevec... with all due respect, don't be dumb. What kinda simplistic, idiotic statement was that?

ridiculous how people are in this strange world...

yeah, i've always wondered about this. do they not have an engineering school? if so, why not? if they do, why isn't it "so amazing" like the rest?

Medicine, Law and Business are higher profile professional post bacc degrees.

Engineering might be lumped in with the other lower profile post bacc degrees. For example, what's the best school in chemistry? philosophy?

I'm a bit biased towards their #5.

This thread is a little weird and will not have a definitive answer b/c rankings are so subjective....They should put a +/- 10 or so after each one 🙂

...And a little mini rant: Everyone I know is done with finals and out partying, and I still have a term paper due tomorrow...::sigh::😡

Did you have a point, indianboy? Or did you just want to be a prick?

Harvard by far is the best university, it excels in every single program and graduate school out there. It is not only the best school in the US, but is also the best school in the world (also I goto Harvard).

Gotta love an idiotic statement-prone thread like this.
😛

For sure, Harvard is top-notch in a lot of things.
It's just unfortunate that many posters on this thread seem to miss out on the fact that there are other great universities and colleges out there. It's interesting to keep in mind that many of the people who are top notch at Harvard have come from other US universities and in some cases from outside the US.

Haha dont be an arrogant ***** kreno. You obviously dont know anything about academia. 🙄

I go to Duke, but anyone who knows anything about research knows that Harvard is top notch in just about any field. No it doesnt have engineering, but that doesnt matter to me really. For any other field out there, Harvard is the best or one of the best. Their profs and research are top notch. There are other great universities, but the fact is Harvard is recognized above all of them (whether that is right or not, I dont know. But it is the perception that counts)

Im not a Harvard fan or anything, but I can at least recognize when someone has done something good, even if I am not a part of it. Arrogant fools like kreno just dont like giving credit where credit is due... 🙄

this is the most ridiculous thread ever! harvard? what is that? please, Penn state is the best 🙄

Yeah, I really wanted to go to med school near Hershey's Chocolate Land, but darn I forgot to apply to Penn State!

Gleevec,
Harvard does have an engineering school, and fyi, it blows.
http://www.deas.harvard.edu/ All of us at SDN would appreciate it if you would refrain from making further idiotic statements.

I get to know some interesting info through this topic. Thanks a lot. But as far as I see, this topic is becoming a further debate rather than a discussion. It's so rude as some members called the others' statements "idiocy" or something like that. And I think they're not appreciated.

i don't know where you get off saying it blows. did you go there?
i know a lot of people don't give a rats arse about US News rankings, but Harvard ranks 17 overall for engineering. i wouldn't exactly call that blowing
and no, i didn't go to harvard.

and leave Gleevec alone, it was probably an honest mistake, there is no need to chastise people about this.

i think most people agree that harvard is the cream of the cream however, most agree that there are other great schools out there.

we all have to face the fact that this world is superficial and that harvard is going to be number one in the eye of the layman and most professionals in more than one area of expertise.

Just out of curiosity...

I was wondering on the rankings for the US & World News for med schools, out of how many schools are those 50 ranked? Are they the best in the U.S. or the world?

I found:
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/grad/rankings/about/03med_meth.htm

"The 125 medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education were surveyed for the ranking of research medical schools; 99 schools provided all data needed to calculate rankings based on the indicators used in the research model. The 125 schools plus the 19 schools of osteopathic medicine accredited by the American Osteopathic Association were surveyed for the primary-care ranking; 114 schools provided all the data needed to calculate the primary-care ranking. Both rankings are based on a weighted average of seven indicators, six of them common to both models. The research model factors in research activity; the primary-care model adds a measure of graduates entering primary-care practice. Specialty rankings are based on nomination by deans and senior faculty. "

So, they're only out of 125. Is that how many med schools are there in the U.S.?
