Anyone have experiences with recruiters that they can share? Good, bad, indifferent. I'm looking for some idea about who to use if I need to go that route. Yes, I know it isn't as good as networking, etc. I was thinking Merritt Hawkins or maybe Cejka. Insights? Also, has anyone used more than one? It seems like you would have your cv sent to the same places by both...

None.

Do the legwork yourself. Show some initiative. We hang up when recruiters call and throw their mailings in the trash unopened.

I agree with JWK. I don't return calls from recruiters. We have been hiring off and on for 3 years and we have never taken anyone that a recruiter sent our way.

I recommend using buddies already in private practice as recruiters.

Recruiters arent interested in you, so its hard to know whether or not they're telling you the truth.

They're interested in getting the commission for filling the spot. Not in your future.

NEVER EVER give a recruiter your phone number or pager number. They will call you relentlessly. Rarely do they have jobs that are better than one you could find yourself. Groups only resort to using these services if they can't fill the job on their own. That is a red flag that there may be a reason they can't fill it. In the end, the recruiting service becomes more of a headache than just doing the background stuff yourself. You let them in the door, it is hard to get them to leave you alone. You sometimes have to be just downright rude to them to get some peace.

If you do use them, lay down the groundrules and you state that you will contact them. Tell them if they contact you against your wishes, your professional relationship is done. That way, you call them once a week or so and see what they have to offer(not much) and you are not getting bothered with their constant calling. Or you can just have them mail you the info. If a job seems appealing, you can contact them for more info. Avoid falling into the trap of them feeling as though it is okay to call you once or twice a day.

In summary, not worth it.

all of these things can be true and annoying/obnoxious recruiters can get under your skin...

However, recruiters can be beneficial in some instances...a recruiter actually found my current job...it was not posted anywhere. he knew about it through word of mouth

I was very busy in my fellowship year and found that they did save me a lot of time...i gave them my CV over their website and told them that I only wanted to be contacted by email....if I really saw something interesting I would give them a followup call...this system worked well for me but may not be for everyone...

I agree that you can do all of their services yourself but do you have the time? are you a good negotiator?

PM me if you want to know who I used......

It would be fantastic if one would have the choice if one wanted to be contacted.
What I mean is that having not gone to a conference this year, it can only be either the ASA, IARs or NYSSA that must be haindg out email adresses, so that I get contacted weekly by recruiters about jobs....

The worst recruiters by far are the captive recruiters of anesthesia management companies.
