Which is better for the summer?

-Continuing to build a rapport with my PI by doing research there?

-Trying to get into a summer research program at a top University?

I would say work with your PI. a great LOR is hard to come by and can be very valuable in your application process. is the top school by any chance one with a medical school that you want to go to?

Longevity with one PI is more likely to result in greater responsibility, eventually your own project, and a solid LOR. But if you don't have a good relationship with the current PI and you seem to be getting nowhere with a pointless project, a summer experience elsewhere could be a good exit strategy.
