Just wondering since ppl are bringing this up. I have had experience with this and all in all, sitting in class seems to be there so that the lecturer won't come to an empty classroom.

I mean I get that no one learns exactly the same, but I would feel super guilty if I was paying 40K per year and never went to class.

How are you gonna learn anatomy, OMM, anything physically related without going to class.

I'm pretty sure if it's lab based or something you have to engage in, OP would attend those meetings.
However, for something like Biochemistry, Neuroscience, Microbiology/immunology .. you pretty much have to study on your own 😛

Have you ever experienced recorded lectures? If no then I can see why you'd say this. There is literally 0.0000000% reason to go to lectures if it's recorded.

I'm not talking about labs, group sessions, OMM, etc. This is just for didactic lectures where a professor presents a ppt in front of a lecture hall.

Lol guys, every school no matter whether or not they have the mandatory attendance will still make you come to labs and anatomy, those are a must. But I meant beyond that. I understand do programs are expensive but I also know that I learn differently in different courses. If I attend a lecture for the sake of attendance and then spend more hrs really learning through recordings, I'm probably burning out and not obtaining efficiency. It's always good to have options and I've been known to attend all my lecture classes in college, so actually I'm quite the scholar. And I recorded all my lectures and seriously, I just feel more at peace because I get to slow down and rewind if I don't understand. Anything that really doesn't make sense, instead of delaying class I instead can go to office hours and have it more competently discussed since I know more then.
Now back to my question please 😀

Ahh I see aha I thought opie meant literally never attending besides tests and sims. I agree tho with not attending if the quality of the recorded lecture is equal to the lecture in person. 2x that and study around it

I think part of it also depends on how good of a teacher you are and what ways you organize the lecture to make it seem comprehensive with just the recording. Personally I play my lectures super slow and maybe 1.5x speed so my recordings tend to take me maybe 2 times longer to complete than the lecture itself. This is where I can see some students getting upset since many don't just want to memorize but truly learn.

My school doesn't have mandatory lecture attendance. Some people simply learn better from lectures, so even if I have ten students there, it's OK.

Have you ever taught a course where no one showed up?

At that point would you just be presenting to no one so there's something to record/upload?

Bruh, you're writing these cats a 6 figure check to torture you for 4 years. You should be allowed to come and go as you please.

I had an Organic Chem class that actually deducted grade for missing class. I felt like it was a High School policy. I like non-mandatory attendance, because sometimes I begin my studying within 5 minutes of waking up. My bath ends when my toes prune up, the water is room temperature, and I finish a ppt.

Never happened for me or any of my colleagues. Some people like coming to class, or are so conditioned to do it.

I wouldn't put it in a financial sense but rather that you're adult learners, and can figure out the best way to learn for yourselves. The "sage on the stage" is actually a poor method of delivering content

I do agree with you, but if med school was free then I wouldn't care if the mandatory lectures were in Portuguese.

Before anyone asks: No, I don't speak Portuguese.

What if they were in Korean??

It could be in Klingon for free tuition.

I'll be the first to somewhat answer the OP's question.

Elective attendance at:

Kcom

Mucom (I think)

Lmudcom

Those are the only ones I remember from my cycle. This would actually be a good list to compile and sticky.

I agree, if others would like to add the list, that would be awesome for more ppl to reference.
