Hey Guys,

I wanted your opinion on which school you guys would choose if you had my options and why:

1. Roseman University, Utah
2. Western University, California
3. University of Detroit Mercy, Michigan
4. Loma Linda, California

I'm currently an Orange County, California resident, but since these schools are all private, costs will be the same for both OOS and in-state. I also can't find any informatio on hwo much Detroit Mercy costs...help?

Thanks!

Detroit Mercy is 53K a year. According to the OSU info sheet, 4 years with living comes out to 305K.

I would go in this order if it was me:

1. Loma Linda - 371K
2. UDM - 305K
3. Western - 352K
4. Roseman - no idea

Loma Linda is a good school and would be close to you. It's in Cali too so you wouldn't have to make a big adjustment and you can save money since you know it well. But Loma Linda does have a few personal life restrictions so you should check that out before you decide. It's also more expensive then the others over 4 years.

UDM is also a good school. But it's all the way in Detroit and that's a lot different then sunny California. Might be too much of an adjustment for you. It's the cheapest though so that could be a major point over Loma Linda. You honestly can't go wrong with Loma Linda or UDM.

Western is in Cali and is a decent school so that's why I put it 3rd. It's been open longer then Roseman and is still in Cali.

Roseman I put last but honestly it could be there next to Western depending on how much you enjoyed it. A lot of people seem to like the curriculum, location, etc. But I wouldn't put it over UDM and Loma Linda because they're more established.

Great post. I'll offer my opinion that you should go to UDM. Saving yourself another 65K in loans will ultimately save you at least 80 to 90K post interest. If it was my choice, I'd swallow the tough pill and go to UDM. 90K can be used to buy a house, get married, or invest into a practice.

👍 Agreed. Dont be worried about Detroit. The school is in a crappy location but no one lives around there anyways so who cares. I didnt apply to Loma Linda but I can say that out of the 5 schools I interviewed at, UDM will give you the best clinical education for GP.

Good Luck!

I would choose UDM, cheaper + strong clinical. The other schools are not even in the picture in this consideration. Although, Detroit the city and weather is a whole new beast, especially if your coming from cali.

Its "crappy" location is what gives it the best clinical experience lol.

Definitely! Ive grown up on the east side of Michigan (Flint, Saginaw, and Detroit), and I would agree that this area provides the most underserved patient pool.

Loma Linda> Western> Detroit> Roseman. Stay in Cali. It will prepare you better for CA state boards than OOS. Unless you dont want to practice in CA. Detroit Mercy is an excellent school.

The CA exam that you are referring to is the WREB, and just like the SRTA or the NERB if you can pass one then you essentially have the skills to pass the others. These regional exams test your clinical skills, I dont think staying in california compared to another place will give you any benefit on the exam whatsoever.

you can take the boards for your state regardless of the d-school and where it's at. How else do OOS d-students eventually come back to their home state to practice?

Tuition is more like 65-70k.

Every dental school has fees and supplies that they like to throw in on top. I'm just quoting straight tuition according to the ADEA guidebook.

I think you should be looking at UDM and Western only. The question is, do you want to leave California or not?

Well, it's easier to get patients if your school can help you with that.

I agree with this post, I would stay in Cali

Stay in Cali or have another 100K in your pocket? Hmm tough choice. 😛

If you plan to practice in CA, it would be a good idea to try to go to school there. With the portfolio licensure that they're implementing in CA (instead of taking the WREB) and with the possibility of networking in the general area you want to practice, it'll make your life a lot easier.
