Hi

Could someone give me a rundown on which dental schools give preferrence to minorites?

Howard, NYU, Boston, Maryland - (I think) and Arizona - they love diversity!!!

I think, this is just my opinion - people don't trust me around here, so get other peoples advice too!

Middle Easterners (I'm guessing you're Persian) generally are not considered to be a minority. sorry pal.

but also add michigan to that list. someone told me that one of the administrators he knew clearly told him that they always leaned towards minorities

if you're not black, hispanic, native american, or a woman, you have absolutely no advantage.

if you a non-white male excluding the above, then you're at a disadvantage.

interesting racial profile breakdown, from what i understand, non-white males are at a disadvantage - is that because white males are getting those spots, or non-white males are the most competitive and are knocking each other out?

Realysa is 100% correct. Traditionally, in the United States, the number of Hispanic, Native-American, and black dentists has not been sufficient to serve their respective populations. Hence the term URM: under-represented minorities. Therefore, if you are a member of one of those ethnic groups, you are likely to receive slightly better treatment in the admissions and scholarship process.

There is no "shortage" of Asian, Indian, Persian, or white dentists out there. As I look back at all my interviews, I would say that 99% of the interviewees fell in these categories. As a result, there is no preference or favoring of applicants in these ethnic categories.

So if you're Persian (or from anywhere else in the Middle East), you are just like a white male when it comes to admissions. No preference.

ianwright, thank you for your post. mvs04, there is more then just iran in the middle-east, and one person guesses i'm perisan, and the most of you guys assume he is right and based you answers on that. i just wanted to know which schools give pref to minorities etc. maybe i did not phrase my question right, i think this is what is should have asked, "which schools prefer their students to be of diverse culture and ethnic background"

I did clarify that i was guessing considering the overwhelming Persian-ness in the health profession. The point is that middle-easterners generally will not be considered to be an URM... As to you question, there is simply no answer as almost all schools try to achieve a diverse student-body....

OK so from what I am understanding...you are saying no dental school gives pref to URM? Correct me if I am wrong, and also tell me which schools DO GIVE pref to URM.

i don't think diversity plays as an important role in dental school as it does in other atmospheres such as medical and law for some strange reason.

i agree michigan gives preferences to minorities and also people with family members affiliated with the school. I think they still have to have somewhat decent stats though, like a 3.3 and 18 or something (in my experience normal applicants would be expected to have a 3.4+ and 20ish).

I'm working my way up to a veteran with 70+ posts !!!

From a research paper at UCSF:

"For instance, in a contrast of the racial composition of the U.S. population in 2000 with the dental and physician practice community and the entering dental and medical student population in 1999, the racial/ethnic distribution of the dental workforce is among the least diverse of health professions. Approximately 13 percent of dentists are non-white, compared to 22 percent of physicians and 28 percent of the population. African Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans are generally considered to be underrepresented minorities (URM) in the health professions. Dentistry has a 6.8 percent URM compared to 8.5 percent of physicians and 24.8 percent of the population."

For the complete article, go here: http://www.futurehealth.ucsf.edu/press_releases/HAOralHealth.htm

If you read between the lines here, you'll see that only African-Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanics are the ones who are given admissions preference. Unless you fall into one of these categories, you are unlikely to gain preference. On a whole, fields like medicine and dentistry tend to attract whites, Indians, Asians, and all people of Middle Eastern origin (Lebanese, Iranian, Pakistani, Arab, etc.). So as a result, you are not likely to gain admissions preference just because you may happen to be Lebanese or Asian or any other over-represented minority.

All dental schools want a diverse student body. But typically, unless you are a URM, schools are not going to give you special treatment.

it's b/c urm who have decent stats go to med, law, or some other with more prestige than dental school. there's such a derth of qualified urm, so dental schools end up with the leftovers.

just apply where you want to go, all schools want a diverse student body. I know Pacific has been trying to increase their amounts of URM. However, if you are trying to get a hand out and think that your stats are only good enough to get in with a lot of help then you are lame and should have worked harder before now.

This is true, so very true. Take care and GOD Bless.

Hi

which schools prefer their students to be from the URM group?
Why do you care?

Let me guess.

You have a sh'tty GPA and DAT but you are a minority.

You are the reason why Howard and Meharry get such sh'tty reputations.

Try merit for a change.

ian I am not an idiot. I was joking about what I said. Who in their right mind would think there are schools who favor low GPAs?? You need to clue in on SDN humor, and enough scrolling.

ya ian you must be pretty dense, that was obviously sarcasm, and your scolling stuff was just annoying

fa sho, jialgamynialga.

Ian just be on the lookout for sarcasm. It pops up a lot when referring to GPA, DAT, etc etc. If it were a snake, it would have bit ya.
