I know that some schools require you to buy a certain brand of laptop that has their software pre-installed. Can we get a list going of which schools do this? I don't want to buy a new laptop only to have to get a different one from the school.

If possible add the brand and if it's a laptop, tablet, etc. If they don't care what you buy, please indicate as such. Thanks.

Last year Case used an Hp 4400 tablet/labtop, UNLV used a Dell of some sort.

Oh and yes, You are paying for these in fees through the school. They don't pick up the bill.

No school is going to "issue" a laptop. I think that point can go unsaid. The price will be either included in your fees are paid out-of-pocket. BTW - I failed to post this when I wrote the San Antonio post, but the laptop is ordered through the school and comes loaded with all pertinent software (dental/digital radiography/office/all textbooks). With that being said...I think this thread is somewhat useless and does not really need to exist. If you are accepted to a school, you will either be notified of the need to purchase a laptop through the school. If you just can't wait to buy a computer and you know that you will be attending a dental school, it only makes since to check with the school to determine the school policy before going out and dropping a couple grand. If you are wondering what brand to buy because you think you might get into a certain school - well, that is just plain studid. (I hope I didn't affend anyone, but you never know if you are going to get in until you get that acceptance.)

I understand what you're saying but I was planning on buying a new laptop in the next 6-8 months but will hold off if the school I go to forces us to use the one they give us anyway. I don't want to end up with two laptops.

That's what I was thinking too. It would be nice to know which schools require laptops because i'm sure plenty of people are considering getting laptops.

The ASDOH laptop from CDW comes loaded with Win XP Pro, some orifice 2003 apps (word, excel, powerpoint), Firefox, and McAfee antivirus. Books and reader software come from Vitalsource (a separate purchase), but I haven't seen a list of required books anywhere yet so I have not ordered any.

McAfee eventually requires a fee to keep it updated, so I dumped it and replaced it with Avast!, a FREE product that I have been using for years.

The laptop has both wifi and bluetooth radios. I wasn't sure what use the bluetooth radio would be, but then I realized I can sync my Palm TX wirelessly via the bluetooth connection. On the other hand, the PDA battery still needs to get charged, so using the USB sync cable makes more sense anyway unless you want to sync to multiple machines and leave the cable connected to just one of them.

We just got the word that this year we will get HP tc4400 Tablet PC's. I guess they hand them out during the first day of orientation (yeah, we pay for it).

i think your laptop must at least have such features:

intel duo core or amd x2 4000+ and above
2GB or more of memory
128 MB and above of display memory (nvidia or ati)
14 in and above display (you need large screen to see your patients' teeth)
cd/dvd-rw (for backup used)
usb (for external backup or flash drive)

i dont care about the brand!! 🙂

is that YOUR preferred specs or that of a school? I can't see any school demanding something like that, especially the vid card, ram, and processor (amd half).
