Hello all,

I am a junior in undergrad and gearing up for applications this summer. I am a Virginia resident. Currently want to go into general practice. I am interested in doing the NSHP, loan repayment or just living in the parents basement for a couple years to pay off loans.
My stats are 3.97 oGPA, 4.00 sGPA, 21 AA, 24 PAT.

Please list school(s) to keep or not keep and why.

Schools:
VCU
Maryland
North Carolina
ECU
Uconn
Harvard
Pittsburg
Florida
New Jersey
Alabama

Florida only takes a few OOS. ECU only takes NC residents.

As said above, the only thing that will stop you from getting into any of those schools is how OOS friendly they are. If the rest of your application/interview is good then you should have no issues getting into most of those schools.

UNC isn't historically very OOS friendly. Usually only 12 out of a class of 85 are out of state. Keep in mind there are around 1,000+ OOS applicants every year. Your stats are obviously well enough to get into almost any dental school either way.

You should be competitive at every one of these schools. Just be aware that some schools are not friendly to out of state applicants, and ECU only accepts North Carolina residents.

Please apply to Maryland... it's an excellent dental school, with a new beautiful building with excellent facilities. Someone from my family got her DDS there, and she loved it (incidentally, she's now in general practice). It was also one of the 1st schools of dentistry in the United States. The tuition is low for OOS, and I believe you can get IS tuition after 1st year. The surrounding area of Baltimore (Inner Harbor, Mt Vernon, Fed Hill, etc) is very very nice.

I also work with people from New Jersey Dental School, and it's located in a rougher park of Newark, somewhat old facilities, the research isn't as good as Maryland, and I'm not sure about OOS tuition (and lots of in-state NJ pre-dents want to go to NJDS).

I thought it wasn't very OOS friendly though...?

Take out ECU, Florida and Alabama. ECU only takes North Carolina residents, Florida and Alabama tend to lean towards their state residents too.

Instead I would suggest applying to Marquette, Louisville, Midwestern & NOVA...etc (schools that are friendly to OOS).

Thanks for all the quick input. Keep it coming!

You can keep still Florida since you have very high stats. Be make sure that it is a school that you really want to go to. Otherwise, don't waste your money due to the reason stated before.

Does anyone know how early students get into the clinic at Maryland, UNC, Uconn, Harvard and Pitt??
